Well, I returned form the vet today. They gave him: 1. Ceta-Drops: .8cc twice a day (I believe that this actually fights the infection) 2. Prednisolone 2.5mg pill twice daily. (steroid to decrease swelling...I believe that is what he said) 3. Hycodan Syrup .35cc 2 or 3 times daily (for the coughing) Around a $50 bill (without even seeing the vet!)...which is fine if it helps him, but I am worried that once again...it won't.

I know what you mean. Parker's cough is not as bad, and not the same as it was. He does get that reverse sneeze and seems a little wheezy in the chest. He was scheduled to get some more vaccinations, but I don't know if they will do it while he is still coughing.

more than a cough? We got a call from the vet last night that one of Sparkles' littermates was diagnosed with pneumonia so, we may need to have sparkles checked again (3rd time) to rule that out. she has plenty of energy and is eating, but i just don't like the persistency of her cough. since this has all happened within 2weeks of bringing her home, should the breeder share in some of this expense? cost of an xray is another $130 (!).

I took Parker to the vet yesterday again. She didn't give him anything else, just said that he is probably still getting over it. Lots of help that was! I'm wondering if I should trust her or find a new vet. I guess maybe she wasn't worried because his breathing sounded okay when she listened. His spells seem to hit mostly at night.

Runny Nose and Sneezing I just bought my puppy exactly a week ago today. Since I brought him home he has had ring worm, and I am already treating that, but now his nose is running and he is sneezing a lot. Is this normal because it is cold outside? Or is something wrong with my baby? I am not use to all this worrying, because the last puppy I had was a very healthy breed. Now I worry 24-7 that something is going to happen to him. he is only 9 weeks old today. He has an appointment tomorrow, but mean while I am freaking out. Somebody please help me.

Cara has had a dry cough sorta like you get when you have an irriteted throat from post nasal drip. It was worse in the morning usually. She had amoxicillen, then clavamox and cough preps. Well, this has gone on for a while so I am doing my own thing. Clavamox, cough prep, benadryl AND warm humidifier. She is clear as a bell since yesterday..Hope it works for her..

My puppy has the same cough and has been like this since Dec 12. It won't go away. Been back ad forth to the vet and now he has given us clavamox and hycodan syrup. She is always a little worse in the morning. Do you think I should put a humidifer in her room to see if that helps?

Anyone know a good way to give your puppy clavamox? She doesn't like it and it is a struggle to open her mouth and put the syringe in there?

I just wish that I knew WHAT was wrong. Hmm.. I have some how convinced Straszny that his meds. are a fun/good thing... so I don't really have problems giving them to him. Maybe he likes it that they are sweet. The cough syrup, he isn't crazy about, but I hold him when I give it to him. Maybe if you try to make it into a fun thing...tricks and such. An update on my vet saga: Straszny had a few bad nights again...it just breaks my heart. I want him healthy. When he has coughing fits, he climbs onto me, even trying to get on my face, and complains a little when I move him close to me, but by my side. poor guy...but it is just crazy, he is fine during the day, and some nights too. He seems perfectly normal besides those few moments. I am now out of steroids, and still giving Straszny the cough syrup and antibiotics. I spoke with the vet for almost 20 min on the phone today(he is SO thorough, and nice too) and I am going to finish his meds, but then we are moving on to the next step. CBC test, on blood cells to check for infection, and then possibly x-rays to check the trachea. He previously felt for it, and felt nothing abnormal, but he says that Straszny should be getting better if it is a cold. I just hope if we do x-rays that they are successful(if there is a trachea problem). he mentioned that it is hard to catch the picture at the right time. Not 100%. A question that I have is how can he have this CBC test while on antibiotics...won't that interfere? Do you guys know? I will have to call. And what about his shot...will the antibiotics be a problem with that? I wish I had thought of all of this earlier. I think my brain became boggeled after 15 min... Also, he is due for his 3rd shot, so I can't decide if I should wait if he IS sick...but thats the thing...I don't know if he is. The doctor said if he is acting normal(eat, drink, play, etc.) then it should be fine. I hope that all made sense.

I am not sure about the humidifier...it is a good thought. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes. And Whispermom, it seems like everyone's puppies have been on clavamox. Mine has been on Cefa-drops. Have you heard of this or know the difference? Last edited by Joysie; 12-26-2005 at 06:13 PM.

Parker was at the vet again yesterday. He is back on Clavamox, which didn't help last time. He it sounding worse and worse, but still acts fine as far as eating and playing and being naughty. He got his shot because they wouldn't want to start the series over again if you wait too long between. They said as long as he doesn't have a fever, it should be okay.

I noticed that same pattern when my liitle baby had kennel cough.Seemed much better and on the mend in the evening and then by morning back to square one. Took almost 3 months to go away with several courses of antibiotics and trips to 3 different vets for opinions because we were so nervous about it. She is fine now, so be patient....and try to relax

My puppy has been on those drugs since dec 12...Some days she is better some days worse. How often does your puppy cough in a day? Mine seems to only cough in the morning when waking up and then a few times throughout the day. My vet said after this last dose of medicine if she is not cleared up he wants to sedate her a little and put a tube down her throat to suck up some of the mucues in her lungs and then wants to send it to the lab for them to examine to find out why she is still coughing. He says since she is still coughing he want to find out exactly why and that is the only way to do it. I am very nervous to do this procedure to my little girl. It is up to me if I want to do it or not but since the medicine is not helping I don't think I really have a choice if I want to know what is making her cough. Has any one elses vet sugguested something like this?

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Has any one elses vet sugguested something like this?
Well, yes I have had very simpilar experience wit 2 different puppies. The first one , last year just at this time we had tryed everything over and over and when the vet suggested it, we did go through with the wash and it gave us no insight at all to what the problem was. The second puppy we got last February and she arrived here with the kennel cough. Treated several times over by several different vets who all did suggest the same procedure after having numerous x-rays and blood tests without any answers as to what the problem was. Having had the experience, before this time I refused, Candi was only 13 weeks old and weighed only 1 lb at the time and I was much to terrified to have her sedated. Another course of antibiotics and she gradually coughed less and less and is now fine. Another important factor is that really sick dogs do not eat and drink well. Mine was doing everything normal except for the coughing and sneezing.Kennel cough is very difficult to cure and takes a long time and a lot of patience when you are so upset and feel as if it will never stop.Has your vet given you kennel cough for a diagnosis ? Good luck.... I sure do empathize with you over the stress of this.
