Note

I find it interesting that almost everyone that is having these syptoms with their pup says that the 3rd prescription is when the pup got better. (I hope that this stays true with Straszny)

we will see...[/QUOTE]

That is really great news...I am so glad he is doing better now.Really interesting....I never realized that we are mostly all saying the same thing....3 prescriptions.....hmmmmm

After Thursday night and the coughing being so bad we just could take it anymore. I have been emailing back and forth with the breeder and on Friday night we took him out there. She jtook him to her vet and they did a sonogram on his throat but the trachea was fine. She has been using the nebulizer on him a few times a day and she is giving him a medicine once a day for 2 days because it is a very strong medication and she will continue with the clavamox. She called yesterday and said that he is doing better but she will call later this today and give me an update on him and when he can come home. It killed us to let him go but we want him better and she was wanting to help. I will keep you updated. I hope that everyone's babies get better soon...

Shane talked to Shirley (the breeder) last night and she said that he is doing better. He should be coming home on Tuesday or Wednesday. She didn't get to hear him on Saturday night because she was delivering puppies but she was going to let him sleep in her room so that she could keep a close eye on him and listen to him. Hopefully he is better by tomorrow and can come home. It sure is a boring place without him running around. I will keep you guys updated when I hear more. Thanks for asking.

dry cough

My little Sebastian also had a horrible cough when I got him. My vet gave him an anitbiotic for 10 days and it still was occurring, so she gave him another 10 days of it and it helped. He once in a while has a cough, but nothing like he had before. I hope your little ones cough clears up too!!

It would probably be a good idea for you to call your vet and tell him since it is the last day for the antibiotics. Some vets like to start another right away and sometime they wait 2 weeks in between courses.
It is not unual that he is coughing worse...kennel cough is very persistant and difficult to finally get rid of.

Default gradually getting better

Sparkles had quite a cough that started in early december. she did 10days of clavamox (no apparent improvement), then 10 days of 5% Albon (a mild antibiotic used with deworming) which also had little effect. We've been running the humidifier 24/7 and also when her cough seemed persistent, given her hycodan syrup.

During the entire past month, her appetite remained very good and her energy level was high, so we didn't get too alarmed. Her sibling was diagnosed with asymptomatic pneumonia -- something apparently going around this year, which few vets can diagnose without a radiograph (xray).

But, thankfully, she is now only coughing a few times in the AM and PM.

When we did have her xray'd a few weeks ago, the vet said there was not an active case of pneumonia, but the xray showed a "lobing" of one of her lungs -- something that he said may indicate previous infection.

Anyhow, for those of you still battling persistent coughs, we wish you the best. I have read some very negative stories about trachea washes and the like -- i'm very glad that our vet is quite conservative and has avoided anything invasive, as that usually means a lot of expense and puts a young dog at more risk.

I have had the same experiece here with Candi.....We went along with several blood tests and several x-rays but stopped short of the trachea wash due to the risks.Kennel cough is very nerve wracking and persistant.
You just need to be patient and persistant in the follow up and care you give your baby. Good luck to you.

Deisel has been home since Tuesday afternoon. Shirley (the breeder) took him to her vet and they looked at the trachea and gave him a med called baytrill but only a few doses because it can stunt their growth. He is still taking his Clavamox and she put him in a nebulizer a few times a day. he has coughed once or twice but for the most part seems alot better. We are still watching him closely for about another week before getting his shot. I know what a hard time everyone is having and I am not sure if it is the same thing but it sure sounds like it. I hope that everyone's littleones start feeling better.. Keep me posted.

Red face

I am glad to hear that he is doing better...I hope he continues to get healthy soon! I had Straszny on clavamox, but it didn't do anything for him. If you don't think it is doing much in your case either, DiTrim is the med. that finally cured Straszny... I am almost finished with the refill of the prescription, and he hasn't coughed since maybe the second day on it or so....so it has been over 2 weeks! Maybe DiTrim could work for you too...if you need it.

I may have spoken too soon. Deisel woke up at 5:30 to go potty and he coughed about 5-6 times between then and 8:00AM. I bought a vicks plug in to put by his crate so that when he sleeps maybe it will help. On Tuesday I am calling a different vet to get him in. I will ask about DiTrim and see what the vet says to me. I think I will ask the breeder if she can have her vet fax over his records. I would like to use hers but it is about an hour drive and that is too far if something ever happens. I am glad to hear that Straszny is doing better. I wonder what is causing everyone to have the same thing? I am in Florida but I am sure that everyone is not from here. Keep in touch & I will let you guys know.

I really am sorry for you both...I know it is hard. I felt sort of hopeless, and I bet you feel the same way. I would see Straszny during the day, eating well and playing hard. Then at night, a totally different story. It was just SO frustrating.

BUT...I just had to keep trying different meds and one finally worked. Just keep trying and praying, and I really think that everything will be fine. Deisel has a good mommy.

Keep us posted
