| urgent medical advice needed I have a two year old female yorkie, Three weeks ago she started following walls and bumping in to things....I took her to the local vet and he gave her meloxicam.....no effect, three days later she got even worse...notable decrease in vision and excessive drooling...went back to the vet did complete blood work...no issues, temperature normal, requested antibiotics and prednisone....just because online research led me to think some kind of encephalitis was at play. we had to go out of town and borded her with the vet for a week...she seemed to have good days where the drooling stopped....he twice gave her intervenous...the first time with just electrolytes i think...and the second was with some kind of chemo drug......I suspect he discontinued the prednisone with in a day or two after we had dropped her off, when we picked her up he gave us prednisone eye drops to give her. so anyway yesterday morning she was acting a little better...still lathagic and not seeing well but improved and ate well...but this morning she is back to bad again...paced all night, bumping in to things....following the walls and drooling like mad....probably could soak a klenex in minutes. Vet has no idea....we just forced a 5 mg prednisone tablet because she can not eat this morning...mouth is open, zero interest in favorite yummys so I am thinking this might be the end unless someone has one last thing to try. |

| These are neurological symptoms. Please find a new vet. They are missing the obvious. While many thing can cause neuro symptoms, liver shunt is one of the irst rule outs in yorkies and then the neuro disorders sometimes seen in the breed. It would be best to just get your pup to a specialty hospital ER so they can do what needs to be done. At the gery least another regular vet is needed today that will send her to a specialist.

| I would highly recommend you get this little lady to a vet school immediately....there are a couple of things that could be going on here....could be associated with liver issues or a neurological problem....she needs to be seen by specialisats IMMEDIATELY. and when all is said and done, I would be changing vets ! |

| at this time several thousand in test is not in the cards...we have already gone close to a thousand to try to figure out what is wrong with her and so I was hoping for some best guess scenarios and go straight to the best medication to try. If it is echephalitus then from what I have read the steroids should be having an effect....unfortunately for what ever reason the vet took her off of them after three days and so we are putting her back on them today...hoping its not too late. If its a brain tumor then I guess its just a matter of time anyway. her vision is way down although yesterday it was pretty obvious she could see shapes pretty well....not today though |

| Was any bloodwork done? A thousand for what has been done sounds like an awful lot. The problem with just medicating is that while steroids could be beneficial in some cases, if it is her lver they are countraindicated. In that case a low protein diet, lactulose, Denosyl, an antibiotic, etc. would be the way to go.

| Thank you, I called the vet back and we are going to try to locate a specialist...hopefully one that will just try some stuff based on the test we have already done. the liver enzymes were not elevated enough to indicate that was the problem. shooting in the dark but there has to be a common neaurological drug we can at least try....cant stand to see her suffer anymore.... |

| I am so sorry to hear about your little. You have come to the right place to get support during this difficult time. I would definately have screening tests done for liver shunt, especially if the symptoms worsen a couple of hours after eating. |

| after reading the liver stuff again...I think I am going to get lactulose and see if it has any effect....do you think it would be immediate if the liver is the issue? |

♥Love My 3 Furrbutts♥ Donating Member | I'm so sorry to hear your little one is ill. From what others have posted I would run to your nearest vet school for a full blood work up. Hopefully you can find some answers to help your little girl.

| Do you have any training at all in the medical field? Can you contact your breeder and see if she can help you with this issue....If I had sold you this baby and you called me, even 10 years later, and told me this baby of mine had been in this conditiopn for 3 weeks, I would be swooping down and snatching up that angel and getting her WHATEVER help she needed....I hate to be harsh, but you are going to loose this precious little soul....she needs QUALIFIED MEDICAL HELP or she is going to die. If you can not afford any more medical bills, PLEASE do the right thing by this desperate baby and turn her over to a rescue that will see that she gets the attention she so desperately needs and DESERVES! If she has a dysfunctional liver, you can NOT just treat the symptoms....you are looking at thousands of dollars for possible surgery..... Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 07-30-2012 at 09:12 AM. |

| Has she been tested for liver shunt? Her symptoms sound very neurological which can happen with liver shunt. I agree that you need to get her in to a specialist and run some tests to get an accurate diagnosis at this point. |
