| Eye sight I have a question about Rosie's eye sight. She sees fine during the day. No problems at all. However, at night when it is dark I think she is having problems. She will not use the stairs at night (she does during the day). Instead she will come to the side of my bed and whine. If I get up to take her out, she will walk along the wall. Mikki doesn't do this. So I am wondering if she may be having trouble seeing in the dark. DH thought she was just spoiled but the walking along the wall makes me think it is more. Has anyone else had a pup do this? Is it eye sight issues or something else? Is there a need to see the vet? Can they do anything about it? Any information is appreciated.

| Its something you should let your vet know about. On chachis last vet visit we made him aware that we felt chachi had slight vision problems because we can throw a ball and it be right by him and he acts like he cant find it. In other ways though his vision seems normal so I dont think its really bad yet though

| Bailey will not jump on the bed at night. I always thought it was because he could not see what he was jumping onto (or whom lol).. because of his back issues we have lowered the bed .. but he still will "ask" me to pick him up to the bed. On a side note.. he "groans" and is 26 lbs so my back is killing me lol Remy .. well at times she will be on top of a toy and acts like she can't see it. She often will not use the stairs at night.. and "ask" to be picked up. At least she isn't 26 lbs She doesn't walk along the wall.. that I have noticed... but I have noticed when I take her out into the back yard to potty she will walk along the fence.. is that the same? Keep us posted if you find out anything.. and I hope sweet Rosie is fine

| PRA or progressive retinal atrophy has been noted in yorkies. The first sign an owner might notice is night blindness. I would talk to your vet and have him check her eyes or refer you to a vet ophthalmologist. Maybe it's nothing but I'd have it checked out for sure.

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Paris had PRA which included night blindness and developed into total blindness. You should have it checked with your vet. There are several tests they can do right in the office. Check out Paris' blog for ideas to deal with a vision impaired dog. |

| I agree with the others that I would have Rosie checked out. Praying it is nothing. Not using the stairs in the dark is understandable. When she walks along the wall, does it seem that she is using it for a guide, or is she maybe staying where she thinks it is safer, not to get stepped on? Maybe there is another explanation, but best to have the vet take a look.

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Before Paris went totally blind I used a nightlight in the long dark hall that had a motion sensor on it. It would come on when someone approached it. I still have it and it reminds of Paris each time it comes on. |

| When I got nightblindness I started avoiding things like that & found the inability to see in the dark was like being virtually blind. I had to hug walls, etc., when outside, couldn't drive nights. Saw just fine in lighted areas or daylight. Of course with humans, it is fixable in many cases, as it was in mine. I now see perfectly in the dark. Can anything be done for dogs with PRA? Can you put LED lights along the stairs or where needed for guides if nothing can be done?

| She is about due for her yearly checkup. I will bring it up to my vet and see what he says. I sure hope I am wrong and she is fine.

| Could she have cataracts causing it like with people and removing those could help this condition, if she is night blind due to that?

| I agree with the others. Vet should check it out. I hope it is nothing. My old boy, Noah (RIP) was nearly blind at 18, he got around perfectly in the house , on the sun porch, still used the doggy door and ramp and played in the yard. His condition was like human retina disease. Not something surgery would repair. Being almost blind did not seem to bother him. But it happened slowly over time.

| Use the report button at the bottom left. I would just hate for the thread to get buried...and you might also get more feedback there.
