| Tiny Red Bug Seen Crawling on New Born Yorkie Pup Please Please Help Ok, so my 2 year old Yorkie, Peanut, just had two pups yesterday at 3:00am. The pups are so adorable and are doing really well, but today I noticed a very small red bug crawling on one of the babies skin. I noticed it another time and had my husband watch when I was at school and he saw it as well. After googling, I discovered that perhaps it was Red Mange/Mites, but I could find no information regarding new born puppies having them that visible to the naked eye. Mind you, the bug was very small, but it was red so it was easier to spot going across the slick, black fur of the pups. Also, there is hair loss on the pup's faces. Peanut has had an itching problem in the past and at one point, lost a lot of hair around her eye. I took her to 2 different vets, who both told me to switch shampoo's and conditioners and never even mentioned this as a possible diagnosis, which really gets infuriating because it itching did not stop. I put cream on her eye every night and once all the hair was removed and with the cream, the problem went away but she still itches behind her ear. From what I have read, the pups would have it only if the mother had it and gave it to them after birth. I do not want to lose the puppies and don't know if this is normal or anything I can do. I am calling a vet first thing in the morning, but I wanted to post this and see if anyone knew. I am attaching pictures of her and the pups. I also have a male dog Flagger and will post a picture of him so he does not feel left out. |

| Congrats on your babies. I do not have any idea what it could be. I would definitely find vet that can help you. Hope you will be able to find out what it is soon. Good luck.

| You need to capture the critter so you will have something to show the vet! I do not believe it is a "red mange mite" because they are microscopic mites. When you see the red bug again, capture it with a piece of scotch tape...wrap a piece of scotch tape, sticky side away from your finger, and when you see the tiny bug, touch the bug with the sticky side of the tape, and you will have it stuck on the tape! Dont let anything stick to the tape on top of the bug! Let the vet see the bug under the microscope and they can tell you for sure if it is a red mite! |

| I get little tiny red bugs crawling on my cement steps out front in the summer. When you smoosh them they leave red squished marks. They look like tiny green aphids, but they are smaller and red. They look spidery. I just wonder if it is a simple outdoor bug that found it's way in. Have you ever noticed them outside? You'd only notice if you sat down on the cement... The pics are very cute and I can't see any hair loss. Good idea to capture the critter to have it identified. |

| Take all the dogs to the vet and describe the bug, let vet do tests, exams needed.

| Do you have plants around the house? I would think they would be red spider mites.

| I agree that it looks like a spider mite , at least that's what I've always known them to be & they do leave a red mark when you smash them. As mentioned it would be a good idea to get one on a piece of tape to show your vet & see what he/she has to say about getting rid of them as the little buggers do bite. |

| When I had my salon a bird built a nest in the roof above the ceiling and it infested the bathroom in that area with bird mites. They were teeny red bugs that did that. They would bite humans but leave no mark just itch at the time of the bite.

| I wanted to post an update for other yorkie mom's that may look at this post and get any help and advice from it. Firstly, the two puppy girls named Recess and Buttercup (their mother's name is Peanut) are super healthy and over eight weeks old. I took the puppies to the vet after spotting the microscopic red bugs on two different occasions crawling over their skin as newborns. The vet checked both puppies out and they were as healthy as a horse. After I took them to the vet, I never saw the bugs again. The vet explained to me that red mange is a parasite that lives on every dog and it was a possibility that, because I work from home and thoroughly watched the pups, that I may have noticed them (if indeed it was red mange.) Red mange is a biological disease if it worsens to the point where there are multiple red bugs crawling on the yorkie skin. Red mange is very slim, however, because any breeder that notices this condition with the mother would not breed her so the chances of this being the problem are slim. The vet also explained that other bugs can get on the puppies new fur from the mom - we hadn't sprayed for bugs for a while and I took mom to the groomer and the problem was gone. Thank everyone for your advice - it meant a lot - if another yorkie mom is going through this problem, I wanted to make sure and give a follow up of how the situation was resolved. |
