| question about persistant licking of wound Our 2year old yorkie male was cut on the fold of skin just in front of his right hind quarter. The vet put staples in it and took them out yesterday. there is still a bit of skin that is granulated, but not completely healed. "Buddy" our dog, started licking the area. we put his "cone of shame" back on him, but the little bugger is so smart he has figured out how to get around the cone and lick the area. Is there something we can put on the area that won't hurt him to keep him from licking the area? We have some Sargents hot spot treatment, but my wife thinks that would cause the area to hurt the dog. I'd sure like some suggestions. Thanks, |

| The only thing I can think of is constant supervision. Maybe put him on a harness and leash and tether him to you. Any time he tries to lick, tell him UH UH firmly and perhaps distract him with a bully stick or other favorite chew-type toy. The collar you have might not be big enough, might want to ask the vet if there is a longer one that will fit him. They all look so miserable, yet cute, in the cone of shame. I hope your little dude heals up very soon so that you don't have to worry any more. Oh yeah, welcome to YT!!!!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I was going to suggest a bigger cone too, how big is your Yorkie? Petco and Petsmart have different cones, maybe they have a bigger one. Also, after neutering surgery, my vet said to use clear roll-on antiperspirant around the wound, if a dog licks it, he gets a very bitter taste. This discourages some dogs. One like this may work. Buy Mitchum Roll-On Antiperspirant & Deodorant, Unscented & More | drugstore.com

| We were not able to use the cone with our Doberman. He thrashed around like a crazed, rabid animal, knocking everything in his path over, trying to get it off his head. Supervision was the only means of making sure he didn't lick. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I wonder if there's a method of training a dog to wear a cone? I can't imagine supervising 24/7. Joey had eye ulceration and a cone had to be worn for over a week. You might want to try training you dog to wear the cone for small periods of time each day until he gets use to it. I also think you might want to check the cone for sharp edges just to be sure nothing is hurting him. You can also wrap some fabric around the plastic cones to make them a little more comfortable.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I found a nice pdf file on training your dog to wear a cone. Maybe it will help. http://www.ouranimalsourearth.com/pd...n_E-Collar.pdf

| I was taught a little trick by a vet tech ... put the soft E-collar on underneath the plastic one. The problem is that the plastic ones in order to fit the neck are often too short...with the little blue soft one underneath, it extends it.
