Default My Coco has IBS

I have been through a very long medical process with my sweet Coco. She started vomiting last Thursday. By Saturday, she was still vomiting. I took her to the vet and she gave her nausea meds, put her on a bland diet, drew blood, took an xray, and put her fluids in her back. I took her home and she continued to vomit. On Sunday morning, she was vomiting bile. I took her to the ER and they put her on an IV, took more xrays and took more blood. There was always a possibility that she ate something. Coco is a big chewer. They could not rule out an obstruction. I decided on Tuesday morning to let them do exploratory surgery. There was no obstruction. They did take a biopsy of her stomach and intestines. After the surgery, she continued to vomit. They continued her an IV, antibiotics and Raglan to control the vomiting. She did stop vomiting last night until they gave her antibiotics orally this evening. She started vomiting again.

Her doctor did call and give me the results of her biopsy. She has mild to moderate IBS. Tonight, they are giving her steroids, Raglan and her antibiotic. This has been an awful emotional rollercoaster. It is so hard to see your baby go through this.

Does anyone else have a Yorkie with IBS? How was it treated? Did your Yorkie vomit a lot?

I am so sorry you and your baby has been through all that. Hopefully they have found the problem and now you will be able to get your baby feeling better.

My Rosie has IBS. We had problems with vomiting and diarrhea before she was diagnosed. We had a few scares before she was officially diagnosed. It is something that can be controlled. The best thing I have found to control it is through her diet. I currently home cook for her as I have found it to be the best thing for Rosie. I used Petdiets.com to get the recipe. I can honestly say that we have not had near as many problems since I started home cooking. Before I started home cooking, she was on Science Diet I/D. The Science Diet did a good job too but I think the home cooking has been better for my Rosie. If I can help in any way please let me know. Feel free to pm me.

i'm sorry to hear of coco's diagnosis but i'm sure it is somewhat of a relief to at least know what you are up against and dealing with after so many tests and hospitals. i do not have any experience with ibs in my pups, but i do know it can be controlled and coco could have a normal healthy life once you are on the right path. it's seems that you are taking all the right steps and going in the right direction with her. i'm glad that you're here on yorkie talk. i'm sure as baby girl rosie has already done, many others with experience on this will be here for you to help you on this journey. i have read about ibs here many times so i'm assuming it is pretty common with yorkies unfortunately. i have got so much help from others here dealing with my girl's issues as well and it is a total lifesaver, i am forever grateful. you and coco will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have one...she also has lymphangectasia. The meds helped her in the beginning when she was first diagnosed. She is on a home cooked diet that I got from a board certified vet nutritionist. There are RX foods that they do well on. I just opted to do home cooked.

There are a few YTers who have more experience than I do...my Cookie was just diagnosed in December 2011.

Hope Coco is feeling better soon!

My Prada suffers from IBS, she is turning 4 in june, I don't home cook for her, she eats Wellness simple rice and duck kibble and wet, she is under the care of my regular vet and a holistic vet, she's been doing great since we added coconut oil to her diet. she eats only fruit and veggies for treats, like greeen beans, cranberries, mango, she also gets a teaspoon of plain whole milk yogurt every day at breakfast. For the first 6 months my vet had me give her 1/4 of a teaspoon of Tylan powder mixed with her soft food for breakfast, tylan is a low grade antibiotic after 6 months most of the symtoms had gone into remision and now she takes the tylan once a month. Tylan is not a cure for IBS but it helps by reducing the inflamation in the intestines. She was also on Reglan. You must follow your vet's instructions very close, IBS and colitis is a very painful and scary disease, I also have a bottle of Pedialyte home, at all times, the moment she starts vomiting, I stop all food and regular water and only give her pedialyte. I know exactly how you feel, I used to cry everytime Prada started showing the lightest sign of diarreah or vomiting. Prada was diagnosed with IBS and Colitis in February of 09, she was only 9 months old.
Hth,
hugs,

Coco is still vomiting...all night. I am so, so worried and at a loss as to what should be done. She is off food. Has an IV, taking Reglan and a steroid. I cannot thank you enough for your advice. I will let you all know what the doctor's say and what we decided to do. I am a heartbroken mom.

Luma has started throwing up once or sometimes twice, every day...she acts like everything is fine, but it now makes me wonder if there is something serious going on inside her sweet little body. It scares me everytime she does it and I thought maybe it was too many treats (she doesnt get actual treats, just little bites from my apples, carrots when I eat them).

I'm so sorry Coco is going through this, and you too...good mommy for being so persistant to find what's causing it. I hope we can yield some results too.

Rylee Belle had a few episodes of vomiting. I changed her to a grain free diet and started giving her a spoonful of nonfat plain yogurt every morning. It seems to have helped her substantially. I know how scary that can be. It's probably just going to be trial and error in figuring out what is best for your baby. I'm sending out lots of prayers for your baby and you. Please keep us updated.

Our vets thought Nicky had IBS and I had him on meds for that until they diagnosed him with Pancrititis

I took Nicky for a second opinion for the Pancrititis, but I was told essentially that he would have to be going through an episode to absolutely know for sure. I don't want to deliberately put Nicky through that pain in order to make sure it it Pancrititis.

It's so frustrating Nicky had the same symptoms as your baby, but he was in lots of pain, I could tell. Poor baby, I hope your baby feels better soon

I am so sorry to hear about Nicky. I hope he feels better very soon! It is so awful when they are sick! Coco was tested for Pancreatitis. It was negative. Her intestine biopsy came back as IBS. The throwing up is just awful.

The doctor let me bring her home tonight. I hope being home will help her rest and recover. I love snuggling with her!

I am so sorry you are going through this. My Taycie also has a very sensitive GI tract. She struggles with horrible food allergies. And after having test sent to Texas A&M her body produces to much bacteria. In short, she has Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth.

When things are not right, she does throw up, and has horrible diaherra. Like Carmen mentioned my Taycie is also on Tylan powder and she is also on a prescription diet. Once I got the diet figured out she truly has become a different dog.

Tylan powder has also been a lifesaver for us. She has been on it since December and at the beginning of April we decided to slowly wean her of of it. She was off it for 3 weeks and we ended up back at the vet for vomiting. She was given fluids and meds and she is now back on Tylan powder. She truly has no issues while on it. She may and I think will be on this for the rest of her life

I know how scary this is and I hope you are able to find some relief.

Hugs and prayers for you and your little one.
