I'm so very sorry. RIP Macie.

Many of us are familiar with the pain you have in your heart right now, and we have different ways of coping with it. The only thing that I found that even began to heal my heart was to get another Yorkie. It's never a 'replacement', as Yorkies are way too unique for that, but a new start with a new friend. There is no set amount of time to wait. Personally, I can't live without a Yorkie in my life. I tried for two years, until I realized why I was so sad all the time. Within a month I had a new friend, and I began to wake up smiling everyday.

Macie will always stay in your heart... they never completely leave us.

I wouldnt mind getting another Yorkie, but seeing what Macie went through makes me terrified. Im scared this will happen again. Even with all the research I did on breeders, I still had to let her go. Its just like a big hit in the gut.

Everywhere I look, her stuff is around and I cry my eyes out. And now all of the "what if" things are in my head.

Im having to send more paper work to Macie's breeder. She has a health guarantee, but Im wondering if I should just find another breeder.

Of course Im not ready to get another baby yet, but it makes me feel better when I look at pictures and read about them.

If any of you lost a baby due to congenital problems, would you receive a yorkie from the same breeder?

I lost a little Shih Tuz with kidney failure. She was about 10 months and it tore my heart out.

My dd had her brother and he is healthy as a horse!! The vet said it was congenial.

I waited awhile to get a new pup.. but that was me. Maybe for you it would be sooner

That is truely a tuff decision. I think it would depend on the relationship that I had with the breeder. I know that Mina's breeder would be mourning right along with me. I still send her notes and pictures on occasion. I would consider getting a baby from the same breeder,but maybe different parents if that was possible.

It broke my heart to hear of the outcome of this situation. I am so sorry for your loss. It is agony to go through, I know. You will know the right time to get a new baby.. It sounds like you will eventually too. It sounds like you've got a lot of love to give some lucky little furbaby.

First of all I want to express my condolences on your greivous loss. Such a hard struggle for you and your pup!

In terms of your breeder, imho, she should be refunding the total cost of your puppy back to you. Get that transaction done and over with, and then you can sit back and weigh the pros and cons of using that breeder again. If her health guarantee only provides for a replacement puppy, I would walk away and never come back to that breeder. That is no kind of guarantee in my mind.

What I really, really, really, want you to do is to commit to yourself that you will not buy a puppy from parents that are NOT bile acid tested, along with a few other health checks that if you would like I will elaborate on. And then when you get your puppy it should have already been bile acid tested - well the actual recommendation is to do at 16 wks, but some breeders will do it earlier. If it has been done, then fine, but you must repeat test at 6mths old.

Also a puppy should gain weight constantly over its life until at least one year old. If your puppy does NOT, something is wrong. Especially if you are feeding an age appropriate amount of food. If there are any signs of failure to "thrive" a vet visit with appropriate tests are in order.

Now onto your question if I would buy from a breeder that had a congenital problem with one of her puppies that I bought.

NEVER from the same BREEDING PAIR

I would only purchase a puppy from this breeder if the following conditions were applicable

a) all parents had all the approved breeding tests - they were posted and they passed on all fronts
b) the breeding lines of her breeding pair - are free from LS CT AAI Chiari,HD for at least 7 generations back.
c) while I was going through the process of losing my baby, she was right by my side, offering support, advise, help in getting into the right specialist right away, etc.

As a breeder myself, I would literally move heaven and earth, to get one of my pups (that I sold) into a specialist right away. I would use what-ever influence with what-ever vet and specialist I have to make that happen. And we breeders do have some - we spend a whole lot of money at the vet's every year, for this n that.

So there you have my opinion.

Stem cells are not currently being used for organ regeneration, only bone/tendon issues. (per my vet, re: my Liver Shunt dog). Stem cells have not advanced to that point yet, though it is in the works.

Congenital means a condition that is present at birth, whether or not it is inherited.

Try to celebrate the time you did have with her. Many don't live that long, so you were doing things right that she was able to live as long as she did. She made you happy, she wouldn't want you to be sad. She knows you did all anybody could do, and she knows you love her. She will be in your heart forever.

Agreeing with all said above....there is a vast difference between "congenital" and "genetic" and heriditary.....be sure you know the difference clearly, for future reference. Short circuit in the DNA is a very good explanation for something like this....it may never have happened with this breeding pair, it may never happen again with this breeding pair....it may not be in any of the littermates, or it could possibly be present in one or several of the littermates, in different degrees. I agree I would not purchase a puppy from the same breeding pair...let the breeder worry about if it is a cross between them that triggered the misfiring in the DNA, resulting in this congenital issue....you select another baby from different parents.....AND ONLY IF THIS BREEDER HAS WALKED RIGHT BY YOU THROUGH ALL THIS. DIAGNOSTIC TESTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAID BY THE BREEDER ONCE THIS DIAGNOSIS WAS MADE. I WOULD REFUND THE FULL PURCHASE PRICE OF THE BABY, AND LET YOU FEEL FREE TO SEEK A BABY ELSEWHERE...I personally have a moral and ethical issue of what I feel is "holding the buyer hostage" by mandating they get another baby from me. If you are happy with your breeder and how you were treated during all this ordeal, if she did not become testy and hostile towards you, if you have developed a trusting relationship with her, and you are comfortable with getting another baby from her, select a baby from another breeding pair....she will understand and SHOULD be cooperative and accommodating. After all, you are going to go out there and TALK about how your breeder treated you!
