I'm feeling much more optimistic that this is a throat irritation. Max licked some ice that I rubbed in a bag of boiled chicken, and he begged for some actual chicken. Then he barked at the clothes dryer buzzer. He sounded a little hoarse and did a little mild head bobbing, so his throat is definitely hurting. Otherwise, eyes are bright, tongue pink, tail up. He is resting in his bed at my feet. I'm too warm for him.

| I just said a prayer for Max and you. I hope he is better in the am. I wonder if licking an ice cube would make his throat feel better. I know when I have a sore throat, ice cream feels sooooo good.

Thank you Patti. The upshot was that the boys enjoyed the trip to the ER after being stuck inside on this rainy day (wish I could be a dog and always see the bright side of things). We got out for a little walk in front of the building, and dad took Teddy to see the go carts next door. I was so proud of the way both the boys behaved in the ER. Teddy was concerned for his brother, so he was really good. Max always knows when a doctor is trying to help him. I let the guys walk around on the floor and they were perfect.

| I hope your beautiful boy feels much better this morning. I had a similar experience with Ashley when her throat got irritated, and she continued to cough for days. After several visits with other vets in the practice, my vet returned from a trip and he was able to stop the cycle of her coughing. Ashley's trachea healed very quickly after that. I'm sorry that you and Max had to go through this.

| Thank you everyone for the well wishes and hugs for the Maxman. He is tired and quiet, but he enjoyed his soft chicken breakfast, and his eyes are bright. We will decide tomorrow if we need to follow up with our regular vet. My understanding is that a true fig tree is poisonous, while the common ficus is not -- our trees don't produce fruit. The vet yesterday said a ficus leaf can cause GI upset, and I have read sources that say indoor ficus trees can be a respiratory irritant to humans . We have had the same trees for 35 years. Although I'm pretty sure that the ficus was not the cause of Max's problem, I would still recommend caution to anyone with dogs and houseplants.
