Senior Yorkie Talker | Giardia question My baby Jake is almost 5 months old. When he had his 2nd set of shots, the vet said he had a slight case of giardia but since his stools were fine there was no reason to treat him. Yesterday, I bought him in for his rabies shot and I had the rotating doctor who said she needed a stool sample and proceeded to put on gloves and reach up into his anus to get a sample. I was very upset and then saw that they added $53.00 on to my bill for this stool sample to go to the lab. This doctor also suggested extra shots in the near future and said he should get neutered in 2 weeks and he will only be 5 months old. I thought he should be 6 months old as he is only 4-1/2 pounds. What are your thoughts?? |

We got a new puppy the week before Christmas...Bentley, too, was 5 months old when we got him...but only 2.6 lbs. I brought him to the vet 2 days after we got him and brought in a stool sample...just because, (the breeder had wormed him a few times before we got him) My vet said he has giardia too...said it was a false positive but, treated him just the same...He had no symptoms at all...but, I still treated him. My vet said where Bentley was only 2.6 lbs to wait until he was 7 months old to have him neutered. I have heard of puppies at this weight getting spayed/neutered...I feel better waiting until he is bigger...My Lillie was 3 yrs old and 4 1/2 lbs when I had her spayed...I don't think thats too small to have him neutered but, if you don't feel comfortable I would wait. As far as shot go...I am on the fence about all the vaccination they give animals...IMO...I don't feel it's necessary..I had titers done on the girls (before we got Bentley) and Sadies came back with her distemper very high...she didn't need another vaccine for 3 yrs!!! I spoke with my vet and told her I only want them vaccinated every 5 yrs...I don't feel it's necessary to be vaccinated every year...MO...I feel it's a money making thing for some of these vets...MO again...I wish they didn't need rabies every 3 yrs either,,,don't feel that's necessary either...I would have told them I wasn't paying for that test....especially where you already had one done....why did they take another stool? and if it were a re-check they shouldn't have charged you at all....And they wonder why people don't bring their animals to the vets....Ridiculous prices..

| It depends on the vet. Mine does a stool sample check at first vet visit and at all the anual visits

| did you have stool sample done when you first brought your dog in, just about every vet likes to do that and if you bring it yourself it is normally around $15.00. If you did not have it initially I can see why the other vet wanted it. However it was not life or death so they should have given you the option of bringing one back the next day and not having her to retrieve it her self, doing that when it was really not needed at the moment would make me livid and I would also refuse to pay it. I think you should wait till the dog is at least 6 months. I can't really comment on the extra shots without knowing what they were, what did they suggest

Senior Yorkie Talker | I did bring in a stool sample on my first visit and just to clarify, it was the same Vet but 2 doctors rotate the hours. The other shots she said I should get would be lepto and bortadella. As of yesterday, Jake has received his 8 week, 12 week and 16 week shots and just got his rabie shot yesterday. I was told by the breeder that would be it. Yes, it was not life or death so I should have been given the option. It was too late before I realized what she was doing. Really, an extra $53.00?? Yikes!! |

| I feel both of the shots are important, most people agree with the Bortadella it prevents kennel cough and if you plan on taking your dog to the groomer, a play date, parks with other dogs, friends houses, pet store, training class and so forth this helps prevent that and it is relatively safe. A lot of yorkie owners will not get the Lepto because it is strong and the dog can have a reaction to it. If they did not explain it to you, it is to prevent against diseases they can pick up from small animals like racoons and possibly geese. Since I live on a lake we have a lot of those types of critters around so I feel it is important. There was a thread here on that subject not that long ago and the majority of people felt it was important. Breeders have told me not to get it, but they tended to keep their dogs inside and not take them many places, I however take my dog around like he was a lab. So you will need to decide if your lifestyle with you dog will expose you to possible infection. If you get the lepto get I like having it done early in the day and then keep an eye on your dog, this way if there was a reaction you can go back and not be forced into making an after hour drive to the ER Vet. Lesson learned on the vet visit, tell them at future visits no procedures that will cost extra until they discuss why, how much, and all the options with you. Sometimes me vet must think I am a B&%ch I make sure to find out how much everything costs before I even go in and I question everything.

My furkids Donating Member | I agree...unless you are going to bringing your pup to parks or boarding her I wouldn't do the Bordetella (sp?)...as for lepto...a lot of vets don't give it to small dogs...like the poster said...they can have reactions to it...
