| Leg Splint/growth plate My Bodie is having some problems with his knee. He went for his first health check (July), the vet (and his groomer) said his teeth were not matured in accordance with his age. Now, he is having problems with the knee on his back leg. The vet xrayed his leg (thinking it was not just the patella) and found that the growth plate at his knee has also not matured to what it should be (said it should have closed by 8 months - he is one year old today). She splinted the leg and will recheck in 2 weeks. She said the next step would be surgery. Do you think I should take him to an orthopedic doctor NOW or wait to see what his regular vet says? What would you do? Thanks in advance for your opinions/advice, I'm very concerned for my little guy.

For me I would only let a board certified orthopaedic surgeon operate on my pups. What is concerning to me is the "teeth not maturing according to his age". That again can come under the purview of an ortho specialist, and certainly should be mentioned, especially if you are 100% sure of his age. Ie not a rescue, you have legitimate paperwork from the breeder etc. Have you talked with your breeder about the problems your pup is having?

| Thank You Gail, Yes Ma'am, I am sure of his age per his breeder. He has been neutered but the vet did not mention this affecting his growth plates. I WILL ONLY let a board certified ortho doctor do surgery. This little guy is my baby boy. Only the best! I was just unsure if I should consult with one now or wait the 2 weeks as the vet suggested to see if we had any changes. As far as his teeth, the vet and groomer only said that some teeth that should have been already in, were not and they thought he was younger than I was told. (When he was neutered, she did pull any remaining baby teeth). The breeder assured me that was not the case that he was born on 12/26/10. She acted upset that I even questioned his age. I have not talked to her again about his growth plate since it seemed to be a mute point with her. Thank you so much for your advise!

| Ortho Surgeon for sure. I sure hope he gets better and you can relax. We all know how hard it is on the human family. I have no idea on teeth and growth plates, I just try to find the best Specialists possible for treatment outside of the range of Regular Vets. |

| Thanks Steve, I can ask questions and worry but then when it comes to our kids, we 2nd guess ourselves.... Are we doing everything we can in their best interest? It concerns me to see him in a splint for 2 weeks, thinking it would throw my hip out to waddle that way. Vet said no restrictions other than not getting wet but I worry that his hip will be the next thing out of whack. I know you understand how we worry. Still think of Carlo, you and Marge and the Spice Boys. I know your's are treasured as much as mine and you understand what we would do for our furfamily (is that a word?) LOL Always Faithful......

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Okay neutering won't exactly affect the growth plates. But recent research indicates neutering should not happen prior growth plates closing; that is why a lateral view of the tibia should be done as this is the last growth plate to close. What is done is done. Okay you can see a surgeon while your boy is still in a splint. But please try to remember to mention the slow maturation of the teeth. This can be indicative of other metabolic disorders.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Just re -read my post. I don't want to alarm you at all, but to merely inform you that slow maturation of teeth, given a certain birth date, is part of the whole picture of health/well being for your pup.

| Thank you! I have been given the name of an excellent Ortho Doc in my area and I will speak to my vet about referring us to him. I will be sure to mention about his teeth also as this now concerns me when my regular vet did not mention this to me. Thank you for that advise. Will update on our situation when we find out more. Thanks again.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Gawd, sometimes I think ppl are inside my head when I type. I don't know if you want to know these details but; neutering stops some hormones from coursing through the system, which affects how much bones grow in relationship to one another. Early neutering prior to closing of growth plates can and does affect how long the bones grow. This creates a problem with joint articulations; how each joint is meant to conform to the one above/below it. This is turn may predispose a dog to CCL and LP not to mention HD. /cranial Cruciate Ligament tears/ruptures, Luxating Patellas, and Hip Dysplasia.

| I so appreciate the information. I love that I can come to YT and someone can give me information in layman's terms, as we say. The knowledge I learn on this forum is invaluable to me and the well being of my "kids". I have spoken again to our Vet and she is willing to consult with a knowledgeable Ortho doc in my area. When we have a "plan" I will update so possibly some one else will benefit from our experience and the knowledge you have provided for us. Thanks to you and those that have provided me with the name of a trusted doctor.

| Thanks for the extra prayers. Bodie will be having surgery Wed 1/11 with a board certified specialists. We met with the surgeon today and then I treated him with a trip to Petco and treated myself to some good mexican food. LOL.... we are already dreading the surgery, recovery and wondering how I will survive his one night stay at the hospital. Oh how we moms worry! I'm sure Cissy will be as lost as me without our Bodie here with us. Will update you after our surgery. Thank you again for all the great information.

| I hope the surgery goes well! My Peyton had to have a pin put in his growth plate due to a fracture. I am so thankful I had it done....seeing him run around with no problems is such a blessing!
