Default Leg Splint/growth plate

My Bodie is having some problems with his knee. He went for his first health check (July), the vet (and his groomer) said his teeth were not matured in accordance with his age. Now, he is having problems with the knee on his back leg. The vet xrayed his leg (thinking it was not just the patella) and found that the growth plate at his knee has also not matured to what it should be (said it should have closed by 8 months - he is one year old today). She splinted the leg and will recheck in 2 weeks. She said the next step would be surgery. Do you think I should take him to an orthopedic doctor NOW or wait to see what his regular vet says? What would you do?

Thanks in advance for your opinions/advice, I'm very concerned for my little guy.
