Thanks for everyone's concerns and advice. I took her back to the vet this morning and we discovered in the new x-ray that the pin bent a little, so now she is in a splint. I'm way more comfortable now that the leg is supported, she's not as comfortable but she'll get used to it. At least now the bone is supported and I don't have to freak out as much with every little move she makes. Still needs bed rest but can stand a little better on her own now to potty and eat and drink.

It is very important that xrays be done to be sure that the bone is mending. I am telling you this because I had a foster who came to me 6 months after fracturing his leg. (the femur in his hind leg). The vet only put a pin in and it did not mend. He ended up needing bone grafting and a plate and screws. The ortho surgeon told me that an IM pin rarely works on a long bone in the leg. I don't know if that is what your pup has....just letting you know of something I experienced. Again, I would recommend a second opinion from a board certified surgeon if that is not who you used. American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Tina broke her back leg when she was six weeks old in two places. She wore a cast for 6wks. and then they wanted to give it another couple of weeks. She was checked weekly and did fine. She is now 14 and has never even had any arthritus in it. Hope your baby does well. I have never heard of one not in a splint or cast. That would concern me too the way you said it laid. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to check with another vet. Good luck, I know its hard to keep them quite and still.

Been a crazy week, went back to the Vet again on Wednesday as the wrapping around her chest from the splint started to pulling her right shoulder and we had to cut it, went to the Vet to get rewrapped and he didn't think it looked right so he re-x-rayed, THE PIN BROKE! So we are back to square one. She had surgery again today, 2 Surgeons worked on her this time and they put what they call a "Halo" on her leg. 5 pins going through her humerus onto this rod that sits on the outside of the leg. Vet said she is doing well, we can't see her until Monday and I miss her dearly.

Sorry all, have been so busy haven't been on Yorkie Talk in awhile. It will be 3 weeks since Zsa Zsa's second surgery. She has been in the hospital since then as the Vets didn't want to take any chances of this operation having any problems. We went to see her a couple of times but we had to stop because they would have to give her muscle relaxers before we went and then some after we left because she would throw a temper tantrum since she couldn't go home with us. We and the Vet thought it best, even though it is so hard, to not visit, but I call every morning and every evening and the Vet calls on Sat and Sun every weekend for updates. She is healing great, still has a long road ahead of her but the bone seems to be doing what it is supposed to be doing. I'm very anxious to see the X-Rays and her progression and her, possibly if everything still healing correctly, on Monday but very nervous at the same time as I don't want her do anything in my care that could cause her to reinjure herself. Thanks for everyone's prayers they definitely seem to have worked.

She's still at the hospital but the halo may be coming off Monday. The Vet says she's 85% healed and I have to be careful of her not jumping or running. How am I going to do that?? I am a nervous wreck! I'm so afraid because she can't go through a 3rd ordeal, and her leg can't. Everyone talks about plates and screws, I'm nervous because he was against that in the beginning, did the pin, that didn't work, now have the halo. Can't do a splint because I believe the splint is what caused the pin to break after the first operation. Somehow the wrapping on her torso moved (I guess from us picking her up and holding her) and was pulling to where she was crying so we had to cut it, after that is when he discovered the broken pin. I am just praying that we've gone the right route, doubting everything lately. I mean when this halo comes off of her she is not going to have anything on that leg! He says he can't cast without going all around her body like the splint, I'm confused, I've seen dogs with casts on one leg like a person. Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks again for everyone's concerns and well wishes/prayers! ![]()
