| Acute Reaction to Vaccinations My poor 11 week old Lilly got her first set of shots today. The vet was very good about giving her some Benadryl before the vaccines to help ward off any allergic response. Within a couple of hours Lilly was shaking and whining constantly. Then she would scream in pain if you even touched. Took her back to the vet and she had 2 shots of cortisone which greatly helped to relieve her discomfort. She had a reaction called parathesia which makes all nerve endings extremely painful. Not sure about her second set of sits in 3 weeks. The vet says she will give Benadryl and Cortisone before the Vaccinations. I never want her to have to go through this again. She is supposed to have no activity until tomorrow night. Try telling that to a puppy who is feeling better! Has anyone else experienced this type of reaction.? I kinda hope the answer is no! |

| Hi I almost lost my little Teasell thanks to vaccinations. She now has issues pretty much with all of them including Rabies vacines. Thank goodness my Veterinarian has stated we will find a way not to give her any vaccine she really doesn't need. May have to apply for a waiver from the Rabies vaccine though she isn't due for one for next 3 years... My thought is even if they have meds like Benedryl on board they still may have some sort of chemical problem. I do know that before she had these reactions she never scratched or acted like she was itching and now we have issues with that. |

| PETS DON'T NEED SHOTS EVERY YEAR Pet vaccination warning. Severe adverse reaction to immunization I wouldn't get puppies shots till they were 16 weeks old, then I would make sure the Vet. gave them in very small doses spread over a few months. I also only have them vaccinated for Rabies every three years, and nothing more. My 16 year old Chihuahua had a reaction to her very first shot and I wouldn't let her have anymore for the rest of her life. Course I never took her to dog parks and the like either. I don't take my Yorkies to dog parks either. They only get Rabies every three years too.

| It's soooo scary! Jackson had a reaction to the 'L' or lepto in DHLPP vaccine as a 12 week old pup. He will never again get lepto. So he had DHPP at 8 weeks, DHLPP at 12 weeks and DHPP at 16 weeks. Then we didn't do rabies until he was over 6 months old (however, this is against the law, wouldn't recommend it). At one year, we did a booster of DHPP and rabies, on separate days. But I most likely will be following Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol and not getting anymore vaccines except rabies every 3yrs. I don't think it's totally necessary.

| Rosie had a reaction this year after her shots. We are really thinking about not doing the shots any longer. Maybe just the rabies and the kennel cough. But not sure about that.

| I have had pups with that same reaction...I don't believe it is considered a life threatening anaphylactoid type reaction; but it is very disconcerting. They usually have the discomfort for 24 hours and then they are fine. It is interesting that your vet gave a name for it...I am going to look that one up. I did not have a name given to me. Scared the heck out of me the first time it happened. As for immunizations, my vet follows the AAHA recommendations: http://www.aahanet.org/publicdocumen...s06revised.pdf

| Well heck, I know the term parathesia. Duh. I really don't understand how that would make a pup scream, but I suppose it is possible. I do know that some of them scream from the DHPP though.

| I never let the vet give more than one of the injection vaccinations at a time. I wait about a months between each. I know I am being over cautious, but at least this way if she had a problem we would know exactly which vaccine cause it. She will be 3 years old next month and after these shots this year I am not going to give anything except the 3 year rabies in the future. I agree that they don't need them every year. I have discussed this with our vet and she is really cool with it and agrees with me. And.... no lepto!

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Sparkle had the same reaction two weeks ago, only hers had the addition of diarrhea and vomiting. Not sure if this was from her expelling the tape worm but I rushed to the vet the following day only to be told it was a reaction sorta like the one we get from the flu shot each year and they recommended pre-vac next time. She is scheduled for the next set of shots and to be spayed on Thursday although I dont know if she will make that appointment |

| Benadryl wouldn't really stop a reaction like that. Sounds like severe pain. I'd definitely be doing steroids or NSAIDs after next time. Steroids is probably a good way to go. It wasn't a life threatening reaction and this is distemper/parvo, so you probably do need to try it again. Once you get through the puppy shots, it will be easier to just skip them. You can always try one from a different manufacturer too. If this was a 2 or 3 year old, I'd say never again. But if no more are given and this is a puppy, you'll probably need to avoid most fun outside things or play with other dogs for life.

| Update Lilly vaccinations Thank God she is okay now. I appreciate all the advice. I discussed with the vet and we are not going to do any more Lepto for Lilly. She wants to premed with the Benadryl and cortisone next time and assures me it will be okay. I have 3 weeks to decide what to do. I may insist on one vaccine at a time to be sure. |

| Didn't realize the lepto was being given. Any signs of trouble with that and it should never be given again because it is non-core.

| Maddie no longer gets shots. i do have take xtra precautions to make sure shes not exposed to anything, but after the HORRIBLE reactions she had and became very sick, i was advised against them. While rabies/ vaccines are required, i have a letter from my vet saying NO! The risk is to high for her, and i wont leave it to chance. shes 3 now. Glad your baby is doing better.
