| Roxi & possible liver shunt I took Roxi in today to get spayed. I was really nervous about doing this in the first place because of her small size (2.5 pounds and 8 mos old). The presurgery bloodwork showed high liver enzymes ?? (hers was a 38). So no spay today. Her vet is taking more blood and sending it somewhere in Tennessee for more testing. Depending on what that shows, she said that the next step would be an ultrasound. Does this sound like the the proper course of action? Other than her small size, she has had no symptoms of what I have read about liver shunts. Is there a forum on YorkieTalk for liver shunts or can someone direct me to a good website for good, accurate information? Thanks.

I do believe there is a liver shunt support group, but right now I can't find the link. Do you know if this is where your vet said he sent the bloodwork to?

| I just picked Roxi up. They are sending the blood sample to a lab (Intek ) to have a bile acid study done. They are sending it FEDEX so I should have some results by Monday or Tuesday of next week. She is so active and happy that it is hard to understand that she could have this defect. She hasn't been sick once since we got her in January.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I will keep positive thoughts for Roxi's test to come back normal. My Cali had abnormal Bile Acid tests and after further testing she was diagnosed with MVD a internal liver shunt. Her is very mild and she had no symptoms. I just keep her on a low protein diet and she has done real well. She was diagnosed 5 years ago. So try not to worry it can be nothing or something very treatable.

| I hope all is fine with her. Even though she has never been sick at least it's nice to know IF anything in advance. Wishing you and her well.

| So sorry you are faced with possible liver issues in your little Roxi. I went thru the same thing with Tiki at 7 months , with pre-op bloodwork showing elevated liver enzymes. We canceled her spay, did bile acid test, did ultrasound which didn't show a shunt, and vet thought she likely has mild MVD. I switched her to lower protein diet and supplements, and 6 months later her bile acid tests were better, so we went ahead with spay. She is now 3, and relatively free of symptoms, except when someone feeds her some fatty meat (which makes her sick for 3-4 days). Your vet is doing the normal course of testing, and it takes a little time. Be patient, I understand how frustrating and scarey it can be.

| Thank you everyone. I feel much better reading your stories about your little ones. I hadn't heard of MVD. I hope that whatever is going on with Roxi is mild and can be managed without surgery (and that we can safely get her spayed in the near future). We are lucky to have 2 very good vets (2 sisters and one of the sisters owns a Yorkie). I will keep you updated on her results. I do have situation that I'm not quite sure how to handle. Where we got Roxi, her sister is still there for sale...we take Roxi to see her every once in awhile. I feel that I should find out for sure what is wrong with Roxi before I call them...is MVD a genetic disease?? What would you guys do?

| MVD can be genetic. But it is NOT contagious. But, yes, I did let my breeder know what was going on once I found out. She needs to know so that she can get the dogs that she is breeding tested. It is something that yorkies seem to be prone to.

| That's great that one of your vets is also a Yorkie owner, so she is very aware of potential Yorkie issues. Also, I wanted to mention that elevated ALT (liver enzymes) does not always mean shunt or MVD. There are other things that can cause a temporary elevation; exposure to anything toxic (poison, certain plants, parasites & infection, etc), and one of my vets even feels that ALT levels are higher in very young puppies overall. The key is to follow up with appropriate tests, and hope the levels come down to normal in the future.

| I kind of thought that maybe other things could elevate the liver enzymes. Is a 38 really that high? I've tried to research on the internet what normal levels are for dogs, but haven't been successful yet. After reading alot of your stories, I am really hopeful that it is not too serious of a situation...she's still just a bundle of fun and love and show no signs of being sick and I'm thankful that if there is a problem, we have found it early.
