Still no word yet, which I'm taking as a good sign for now. The doctor said the results wouldn't be back until early afternoon, but I'm going to call and check on him at lunch to make sure there haven't been any changes.

![]() I'm calling at lunch to check on Maddox. I don't know whether to go ahead and ask about HGE or wait until the blood results are in?

| ![]() Since it was really dark, it sounds like it is coming from higher up. You did say dark, right? Both melena (bloody stool from higher up) and hematochezia (bleeding further down) have a long list of diseases associated with them. Melena is defnitely more concerning. My first thought is HGE. Common in Yorkies. Not really an apparent reason that it happens, etc. That is what I would be hoping for now. Could be the pancreas although HGE fits the description better. Some of the other things it could be aren't fun to think about and so I'd just focus on getting the bloods back. If it comes back clear, you are probably looking at xrays next. There is no way he could have sneaked and ingested a foreign body? BTW, they didn't do any bloodwork in-house??

| ![]() OMG! Sending prayers for dear Maddox... A PCV is easy to do inhouse, no machines necessary... I'm thinking it's HGE also.... seems to hit more frequently in the spring , thouigh we see it all year long. Sorry I just saw this thread now.. Some lawn chemicals you have to wait till after it rains to have pets on the lawn... Hugs,

| ![]() I hope that Maddox is ok. Ringo pooped blood in two separate episodes - it looked like red jelly. He ended up having gastroenteritis - cleared up with a prescription and some Low Residue dog food. The first time - he got into some chicken bones- the second episode we were not sure of the cause. Hope they can figure this out quick.

| ![]() Just seeing they don't have an in-house lab. So weird since it's a hospital.

| ![]() The blood results are back. I just spoke with the doctor and I did ask about HGE. All of Maddox's results looked excellent. His hemocrit levels were right where they should be, no indication of HGE or pancreatitis, liver function looks good, kidneys are ok.....she found nothing at all in his blood work to indicate a problem. He is not dehydrated at all, and upon exam his stomach was not tender or painful and no objects/obstructions were felt. He's had no further bleeding or BM's since his arrival this morning. The plan for now is an injection to help with his appetite and diarrhea, and two meds sent home with him tonight- one a probiotic and the other to firm up his stool. We discussed doing a barium series on him, but she felt that it wasn't called for just yet. I'm going to see how he does tonight and then we can do the barium xrays tomorrow morning if things aren't any better. Is this a sound treatment plan? Should I go ahead and have the barium series done today? I want to do whatever needs to be done for Maddox, so any advice would be appreciated.

I just posted my discussion with the vet and at this point our next consideration would be a barium series to see if he did ingest something. We spent most of the day in the backyard Saturday and I usually walk around to make sure there's nothing there for the little mouths to pick up (I have neighbors with toddlers so I occasionally find some weird things have made it over the fence). But my lawn had just been mowed Friday afternoon so I didn't go all around like I normally would have. It's possible he did ingest something on Saturday. I don't know if the time frame fits for the bloody stool this morning?

| ![]() I know. You all have me curious now - I'll ask more about it when I pick him up tonight. I do know this was a full panel, including thyroid, so maybe that's why they sent it off??
