ritz is 8wks 2days old...his dob is 2nd nov 2010
he walked into my arms on 24th dec 2010...he was given merial by the breeder before he came to me ....but thats it no shots yet..

Exactly how old is he, how much does he weigh, and when was he taken away from his mother (how long has he been in your home)? Has he recently had any vaccinations?

Do you have , and know how to use it to prevent hypoglycemia? Very important in little ones who aren't eating.he just has diarrhea no vommiting or blood thank god.


The first few days/weeks in a new home can be stressful to little ones and cause changes in eating and diarrhea. When my first Yorkie came home and wouldn't eat, finely diced boiled chicken breast was the one thing she couldn't resist, and a bit of cottage cheese.

Did the ER vet also check for coccidia and guiardia? My second doggie to come home had diarrhea with mucus and blood by day #3, which turned out to be coccidia and was easily treated. Be sure to clean up potty spots very well.

Hope he feels better soon, and do keep us updated, as we all share your concern.

How much does he weigh?

One thing many members here use to treat diarrhea (& also constipation & upset tummy) is give them a little bit of canned pumpkin, make sure it is just pure pumpkin and not the kind with spices for pie. You can give tiny bites from your finger.

Again, be sure you know how to watch for hypoglycemia and dehydration in puppies. There is a sticky note somewhere on this forum, but I don't have time to find it. Do a search, you'll find them.

With a sick pup I would hesitate to change his food or to try a lot of different things. One thing you want to do is to let his tummy rest. If he was my baby, I'd try to find one thing that he would eat and stick with very small portions fed frequently - every hour or two and encourage him to drink water until his stomach settles. Then I would start back with the kibble mixed with his "sick kid" food. It would help him over the hump by providing enough calories to prevent hypoglocemia plus ease him back into eating his kibble.

To help encourage him to drink - try a very small amount of white corn syrup (kayro) in his water to sweeten it a bit.

Also there is a fantastic product called DYNE - you can order it from Revival -Dyne - Revival Animal Health. This is a high calorie supplement that will help boost his calorie level until he is back on track with his eating.

okay...so after eating like literally a pig all of a sudden..ritz throws up and now he seems like he feels a lot better...find it very weird but for some off reason he seems like okay ...better then yesterday..but he's still not drinking a whole lot...cant really complain...he is definitely alil better atleast...hes playing and barking...then again i might be wrong....

I'm glad he's doing better! I agree with the posters that said not to do try too many things. Honestly, I wouldn't change anything that the vet suggested without clearing it with him first. It takes time for them to adjust to any change in diet. When mine are sick, my vet doesn't change their normal diet unless it goes on for several days.

I assume that your vet did check for Coccidia and Guardia. If neither of these are present, hang tight. It sounds like you've gotten past the worst of it. I know it is so scary when something is wrong with them. I wish they could talk!!

after he threw up the can food that the vet gave i went back to his original natural choice dry food (soaked in a lil bit of water) he's seems to be eating better...not alot but still eating...drinking okay ...not as much as i would love for him too but i am so glad hes better...i was in tears..i thought i did something wrong ....
yes the vet checked him for everything thank god he has none of them...but ya life would be so much better if only they could...i felt so helpless when he was sick ....

Charlie went through this but he had a virus. Carrying him to your original vet is probably a good thing. I had to use a syringe to make Charlie drink every couple hours to keep him hydrated. That was the main thing, is keeping water down him. Let us know how your little one does. Ya'll are in our prayers.

thank you very much for worrying with me and coaching me through this ordeal...
ritz is a lot better..his stool seems to be solid instead of diahrrea ...he was hoovering around his food but not eating so i placed some of the niblets in my palm and it seemed to have worked ...he ate ..not alot but more than the last 2days...he is drinking alot better as well...wondering is it okay to give him treats ?? i also managed to get a can of goat milk..should i give him any or wait??and how many times should i give him his energy booster?? i usually give him about 3-4 times/day...

I know just how you feel. I have an 8 week old shih tzu. Who we got at 6 1/2 weeks old He didn't even have his teeth yet. Only 1 or 2. Since we found him we had no idea of his background. I took him to the vet right away and she did all kinds of tests. Everything came back fine. It's really hard with a very young puppy. The only thing good was that he ate really well. Once I got him to the vet I felt much better. They tested him for everything and I just had to sit back and wait for the test results. Since I never had a puppy thing young I was really terrified. As I said we have no idea of his background so that scares me also. The important thing is you can't panic. You did what you had to do. You say he's eating so that's a good sign. I'll keep my fingers crossed for Ritz but I'm sure he's going to be fine. Raising a young puppy is really scarey

Poor Ritz is so young and so tiny. Yorkie puppies should stay with their moms until they are at least 12 weeks old, longer if they are every tiny. Reputable breeders keep their puppies until they are at least two pounds. You've got a rough month or so ahead of you.

The risk of hypoglycemia is very high in a puppy so tiny. Don't overdo the "energy booster" (Nutrical) as it is only for hypoglycemia/low blood sugar, not a replacement for a meal. It will make him feel full and not want to eat his food. It's a quick sugar fix when his blood glucose drops too low, but unless you follow up with a meal, he will just crash again. He needs a good meal with protein and complex carbohydrates to stabilize his blood sugars. Hand feed him if that's the only way you can get him to eat. At his age, he might do better with canned rather than kibble. A little guy like Ritz needs frequent meals, at least 4-6 times a day.
