Default i am in tears ....please help...

hi ....so ritz who is now 8wks 2 days old wasn't eating so i mixed his dry food with wellness canned beef strew...neither less to say it didn't sit well in his stomach and he had the diarrhea...
all of my YT angels told him to take him to the vet so this morning i took him to the emergency ....they did a parvo test which came back negative ...since he was a lil dehydrated and wasn't drinking they injected him with subcutaneous fluids(metronidazole) and told me to keep an eye on him overnight....the vet gave me different puppy food which ritz ate like crazy...
i am in tears i dont even know what to do ...i am going to take him to his original vet tomorrow....did anyone else had anything like this....

It sounds like you are doing what needs to be done You took him to get care and that is what he needed. I will say a pray for his vet visit tomorrow.
Glad he is eating...is he drinking on his own now?

Try hand feeding him plain boiled(or just cooked) chicken. Give him Water through a syringe every 20-30 min or so. You can even mix nutrical with the water and use the syringe. I'm sorry I hope he feels better soon.

I am sorry you are going through so much with your little one. When I got Cali over 5 years ago she was at the vet or ER every week or so for one ting or another. You are doing every thing right by taking him in. The metronidazole works great for my gang when they have bouts of diarrhea. I would guess the diarrhea is from the food change. Just keep making sure he is eating and hopefully is tummy will settle down soon.

I add my praise to the others. Especially with a pup this young, never wait to see the vet. You did the right thing.

I found some white rice cooked with a skinless chicken breast and water - no salt, butter, or anything else, then blended to make a gruel did magic for my dog when she had tummy problems. But I would not make any dietary changes without consulting the vet.

One other suggestion - you didn't mention any other household members... if there are any, you should make sure no one else is feeding other foods and avoid having them handle the puppy. I know these babies are so cute that everyone wants to hold them but they can be sensitive to overstimulation.

Well.. if it's only one other person and the play isn't rough, it's probably going overboard to suggest that he not touch the puppy. I was thinking more of a household with kids or with lots of visitors.

Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

You have done the best thing possible already, which was to take him to a vet. Keep following up with vet help until things are resolved.

In the meantime we YorkieTalk members will throw out some possible things, but remember we are just guessing here, and are no replacement for vet advice.

Exactly how old is he, how much does he weigh, and when was he taken away from his mother (how long has he been in your home)? Has he recently had any vaccinations?

Do you have Nutrical supplement, and know how to use it to prevent hypoglycemia? Very important in little ones who aren't eating.

The first few days/weeks in a new home can be stressful to little ones and cause changes in eating and diarrhea. When my first Yorkie came home and wouldn't eat, finely diced boiled chicken breast was the one thing she couldn't resist, and a bit of cottage cheese.

Did the ER vet also check for coccidia and guiardia? My second doggie to come home had diarrhea with mucus and blood by day #3, which turned out to be coccidia and was easily treated. Be sure to clean up potty spots very well.

Hope he feels better soon, and do keep us updated, as we all share your concern.

It sounds like you are doing everything right with the little guy. They sure do tug at your heart strings when they are sick, don't they? I went through quite a few foods until I found some that didn't upset Rhett's tummy. Just go slowly when you do decide to switch foods to minimize the chances of an upset.
