| 11 Month Old with a Cough Ok lets try this again, some how my post didn't go through. I have read and browsed many threads about coughs. Two nights ago she coughed a few times, didn't think much of it only b/c she had been playing and I just had her hair cut. It was a little short and made her itch a bit so I thought it had something to do with that. I groom her myself, she is up to date with all her shots, she doesn't interact with any other dogs or animals for that matter, besides my fish but they don't count, ha. She coughed enough earlier that I had to start her a steam shower and we sat in that bathroom till we both were too hot, the steam seemed to help. My vet is closed Sunday and I am not sure I will be able to get her there tomorrow. I will be able to get her there Monday, but until then is there something I can do to help her feel better, she seems to have a congested cough that bothers her when she gets worked up plays, or runs around. Would it be ok if I added some Vicks to the water when I give her some more steam? She doesn't have a runny nose and isn't lethargic. Right now she is layin in her bed on an electric blanket. Thanks in advance to all those that take the time to read this post and share any information they have and also I promise I will keep you all posted of her status. |

| I don't know if the Vicks would irritate her eyes from the vapors. Can you call the vet and maybe they can prescribe something or try to squeeze you in. Hope your pup is feeling better. |

| Little dogs with congestion can become pneumonia very easily. I would suggest an emergency hospital. I believe this one is within 30 miles of where you live: Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, LLC Address 2611 Florida St. Mandeville, LA 70448 Phone Main: 985-626-4862

Donating YT 500 Club Member | If she was coughing enough to warrant a steam shower to help relieve the cough, she needs to be seen by a vet today if at all possible. I would rearrange my schedule, do whatever I had to do....but I would be getting into the vet today - it might save you a trip to an ER vet later tonight or tomorrow. Hope she is all better soon! And, do keep us updated please

Ok, long story short, since my last message as too long and my session timed out causing me to lose my message. I was able to see vet today, prescribed .75mg of Amoxicillin twice daily, comes out to 10 days worth, the nameless Antihistamine / Steroid, probably on receipt (in car), give ½ pill twice daily for 4 days, ½ pill once daily for 4 days, and ½ pill for 4 days every other day. DR notes verbatim are: Exam – temp – 100.2, color – pink, deciduous canines (upper), heart/lungs – ok, abdomen – ok, harsh tracheal cough elicited on palpation, scant clear tenacious phlegm in pharynx, tonsils ok. She said temp was a bit low and I could give her ½ tsp Robitussin DM every 4 – 12 hours. Dutchess got two steam showers this morning while I was at work, which was from 4am – 9am, though I think some of her anxiety is rolled over from my GF who gets stressed when Dutchess is coughing, since I have gotten home all day even when at vet she has not coughed, just a couple of sneezes. I am going to give meds as prescribed but I don’t think I am going to give her the Robitussin b/c I have no experience with that particular medicine and dogs and she is not coughing. The Vet said I could continue the steam showers if needed as they are recommended in situations such as this. And to “Recheck if not improved within 5 – 7 days.” As I type this message she is sleeping on the couch next to me as she is waiting on me to go to bed, such a daddy’s girl, she is so ready to go to bed but I am still up so she is sleeping out here with me instead of in bed. The canines she mentions I am going to have addressed when we have her fixed, which will be done once she fully recovers from her cold. I am not sure if I am missing something, I wanted to give as many details as possible since there are so many people on this forum willing to help and make me feel welcome and more comfortable with my first little dog. I will update status as the days go by to keep all informed and possibly pass on some knowledge to the next person. And thanks for the information about the Emergency Vet Clinic as this information is now in my phone as well as my GF’s, though hopefully it will not be needed. Thanks again for the information and concern to all those that have read and responded to our time of need. Love Dutchess and Family. | |

| I'm very happy she is getting antibiotics and is getting better. They are so little that they can go downhill quickly. Let us know how she does

| Just an update, she is doing fine. She's laying here on the couch on her electric blanket, as it goes without saying, she is spoiled. |

| Glad to hear Duchess is doing better. I'm glad you got her to a vet. My Shorkie was very sick last year. I was in the hospital with a broken hip and my friend waited too long to get her to the vet. When she finally took her she was very close to pnemonia. You have to be so careful with these little fur babies. |

| I'm so glad she is fine! Of course, she's spoiled. That's as it should be. Have a Merry Christmas.
