| Injury to leg causing LP? Before I begin, let me first make it clear that I have a vet appointment at 5pm today. I'm just looking for reassurance until that time. Yesterday my husband accidentally stepped on Lulu's rear right leg when taking her out to potty. He said she yelped, he picked her up & checked her over & then put her back down and she proceeded to run and play like normal. We didn't think any more of it. She was normal the rest of the day. Fast forward to this morning...I am holding Lulu in my arms when I feel a pop in her leg (similar to what it feels like when our knuckles pop). Lulu didn't cry or act hurt. I held her a few mins longer & then put her on the floor and she appeared fine. A few mins later I placed her on the couch with me as she was ready for her morning nap beside me. She was moving around getting comfy & I heard a pop. I looked over, picked her up & she held her leg up for a brief second as if it were hurt. I cuddled her & then placed her on the floor to see if she could walk. She did & didn't hold her leg up at all. Since then, she favors the leg ever so often but continues to run and play like normal. I am trying very hard to have her rest her leg but we all know how hard that is. So, I'm concerned that Lulu might have luxating patella. She has never had a problem before. Her last vet check was about 3 months ago & her knees were checked and were perfect. I've been reading everything I can about LP. I've done a search here & have read EVERY post that came up. Literally! I know most seem to think LP is hereditary, but I did see some that mention some LP can be caused by trauma. I don't really have a question I guess. I just need some support. I am an absolute nervous wreck about this! In case anyone is wondering, here's Lulu's stats. 7.5 months old & 3lbs 6 oz.

| I hope Lulu's leg is okay. Sending good vibes your way that the vet will have good news for you. My knowledge of LP is limited, but my understanding is that it can be either congenital or caused by injury. |

| not likely More than likely it merely uncovered a situation already there. I know, my vet told me my girls knees were fine, but they aren't. They pop sometimes and I see her on occasion keep it "just" off the floor. I don't think they really know unless they do extensive tests, they just have an educated guess before that. Hope your little one is ok. Last edited by BlueBelle; 11-29-2010 at 09:45 AM. Reason: typo |

| Thanks for the support. I just find it very odd that she showed no symptoms until today, one day after being injured. I'm still holding out hope that perhaps it's not LP; however, after all of my research I am almost certain that is what it is. I'll update tonight or early tomorrow morning after our vet visit. Why do I feel like it's the end of the world? I mean, I know many pups have lived long, happy lives with LP. But I feel incredibly guilty & almost like she's been given a death sentence. She's so young & she's just like one of my kids. I don't want anything to be wrong with her that I can't make better.

| I am major worrier, so I won't tell you not to worry. However, don't drive yourself crazy thinking about what ifs. Wait for the vet and keep things in perspective. Put on a happy face for your pup. Looking forward to your update. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Hopefully it is sore from the accidental injury. My Pixie walked off my bed)uses ramp normally but male I took in scared her)several months ago and seemed fine. The next day my DH called and said Pixie was falling over. I rushed home and she couldn't stand up. After awhile she started walking but holding the leg up. I took her to the ER of course regular vet was closed. They said LP. She had never been diagnosed with it so I was surprised. I had another er vet look at her and then my own vet. They all agreed it was Grade 3/4 LP and her knee would not stay in so they all recommended surgery after resting it didn't work. I still believe it was from the fall but the vets said it was LP and insurance denied all bills as it was genetic. I would really try and rest her in a crate until you go to the vet. Pixie wasn't use to being crated but did pretty good during her recovery. Hopefully with some medicine and rest LuLu will be fine and not need any further treatment. Good luck. I know how worrisome these little ones can make us.

| Patti, I am sorry to hear about your little one. I hope she is doing better now. I, too, am a major worrier. I know I shouldn't worry right now b/c I don't know for sure what it is & there's nothing I can do right now except to keep her safe. But I have been online since 7 am researching & reading. I've given myself a headache! I am trying to keep Lulu still. She does not stay in a crate, but a pet playpen. I've kept her in there a while & now she is laying beside me. I'm carrying her to potty & such trying to not have her run around as much. 5pm just can't get here soon enough.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks Pixie is doing real well. My Cali has grade 4 in both legs and her knees are permanently out. So far they have not bothered her and she is 5 1/2. My vet said to just do a wait and see since she has a mild case of MVD and she prefers not to have to put her under for the surgery. My vet said she has treated several dogs with grade 4 LP and they lived their whole life with out needing surgery. The only reason I had surgery on Pixie is that she could not adjust to her knee being out and it would not stay in. Hopefully, with rest and some medicine Lulu will recover without surgery. I will keep positive thoughts that your visit goes well today.

| The answer to the question is yes according to research that LP can be caused by injury. It is also common in Yorkies and passed from parents. However, and injury one day prior with just stepping on her and then her being fine sounds a little far fetched to have caused it. I would have to refer to on Ortho vet and they can differentiate between LP from injury and LP from heredity. Hope your furbaby is ok...

| Update from vet visit: Vet confirmed Lulu has LP in BOTH legs. He graded it as grade 3 in both. I'm shocked & overwhelmed right now. Lulu seems ok, but the right leg is giving her some trouble still. I guess I'm shocked b/c just a few months ago, her knees were perfect with no signs of LP and now it's grade 3???

| Can anyone recommend a vet to see about a second opinion? I trust my vet, but I also think a second opinion is valuable. I am near Huntsville, AL. Thanks!

| Look for Orthopedic vets in the area... I did want to ask if you have contacted the breeder. This did not happen from a few days ago and most states have laws about defective animals and you may be entitled to at least your money back or the breeder to cover some of the vet bills for this baby. Please check into that also.

| I am not from your area however I would think that 2 hours drive would be worth the trip for a second opinion from a specialist for me.

| I agree. I'm doing a bit more research first. Don't want to make the trip if the vet doesn't meet my standards.
