Max is Limping - Seizure Related?

He is a big boy! Max and Fynn are three days off from having the same birthday and Fynnlie only weighs 4lbs to Max's 7lbs!! I really hope you get his Pheno levels regulated soon! Good luck!

I'm just seeing this thread, but I'm so glad it looks like Max just has a minor injury. I hope he continues to get better quickly. The hardest part will be keeping him quiet and inactive for a few days while he rests. It's so easy to go to worst case scenario when you've been through as much as you have. Max (and Cooper) are very lucky to have you!

I am just seeing this thread now, and I am relieved that Max is doing much better. I wish I would have seen this sooner. I am quite certain that I would have been just as worried as you were considering all that you have been through with him. You are also Max' mom, and that's what mom's do. My littlest one, Gracie, was a year old when she hurt her paw when running at a fast speed. The breeder that I got my girls from had told me to try to hold off from running to the vet for something like this for 24 hours to see if symptoms relieve themselves on their own, but she was crying and wouldn't walk so I went to the emergency vet.with her since it was midnight. He said Gracie injured her paw badly for what it was, but it still was the equivalent of a badly stubbed toe. They had to give her valium because she wouldn't sit still for the x-ray, but otherwise all they gave her was a shot of anti-inflammatory. She would not walk that night and just held her paw up. Nothing had ever stopped her before, and I was still really worried. The next morning Gracie was tearing around the house again, and I couldn't believe it. I'm sorry you have had to go through all of this worrying. Your doctors at LSU seem amazing, and I'm sure they will regulated Max' phenobarbital levels. I hope you are able to rest easier now, but I totally understand why you always worry about your little boy. I can tell you love him so, and you both are so lucky to have each other.

Unfortunately, I now go to the vet for every little thing. I prefer it that way although I now realize I'm quite paranoid.

I actually have my regular vet checking Max's phenobarbital levels. They said they could do Max's maintenance. It's better than my driving an hour to LSU. However, I have everyone's email addresses and when Max started limping I emailed LSU.

Max is extremely lethargic. VERY. He's definitely not his normal self. I'm guessing the doubling of his medication may have done that to him as that is one of the side effects. It should regulate though in a couple of days. He's also taking Rimadyl which I also believe causes drowsiness. I'm debating calling my vet, but not sure if I really need to. Maybe I should wait until Monday.

Did they just up his pheno dose? Pheno will make them very drowsy. It takes about a month for the body to adjust to the pheno and then he will be less drowsy.

It broke my heart the first month Lady was on Pheno. She was a zombie. She did adjust to the medication, though.

We have to be very careful not to give her anything else that might be sedating. She can't take Benadryl at all. She literally cannot walk she is so sedated. I have never heard of Rimadyl being sedating, but check with your vet. I'd also be concerned because some dogs can't tolerate Rimadyl and have serious side effects. Lady has multiple health issues and always gets Tramadol for pain.

This is the 2nd time Max's dose was doubled. I didn't notice much lethargy the first time, but it seems this has really taken a toll on him. I'll give the vet a call about Rimadyl. He's taking it as an anti-inflammatory.

Max's pheno levels have not even been on the charts since he's started taking it. Both level tests have come back extremely low, so maybe he's never had the side effects. However, he is extremely hungry all the time. It's getting very difficult to stop the crying in the kitchen. His water intake is incredibly high as well.

ok, we are going to the vet to get Medicam instead of the Rimadyl. I just did 5 minutes of research on Rimadyl and it looks pretty scary. She says he's definitely tired from the Phenobarbital though.

Thanks. I swear we've been at the vet 2x per week since I got him. He played for a few minutes today which was so wonderful to see. He's sleeping now. He's not potty trained yet, so the increased drinking and urination is making things so very difficult. He cries all day long in places where he knows food is stored. It's tough to handle but we are trying.

Actually Max is not appearing drowsy anymore. And, the appetite is not going to go away for a while because of his seizures meds.

What I'm curious about is how long it will take his leg (or hip or back) to heal? He started Metacam on Saturday. He's not limping all day, but if he gets excited and runs to the door or plays with Cooper for a couple of minutes he'll start limping again. The limp only lasts for a few minutes, then he's fine.

I'm trying as hard as I can to keep him rested.
