| My little guy Jackson has been diagnosed with liver shunt We took Jackson to Cornell University on Tuesday for additional blood work which is showing levels consistent with my vet as a liver shunt. He is going for a CT scan next week. I have heard of a Dr Center from Cornell who is doing a study on this. Does anyone have any info on her/the study? I am trying to figure out how to come up with the money if surgery is needed (most likely) but would like more information on my poor little guys problem. Any help or links would be appreciated. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Dr Center developed the bile acid test. You'll find lots of links here... JaLa Yorkshire Terriers...Liver Shunt Information and Useful Links Many yorkies have the surgery and live long healthy lives. Sending prayers to you and Jackson.

| You are going to a WONDERFUL place! Either Cornell and/or U of Tenn would be where I would go if mine needed Liver Shunt Surgery. Have you looked into Care Credit? CareCredit Veterinary Financing for Pet Care, Pet Surgery, Vaccinations & Other Veterinary Medicine Procedures Also you should join this group. They have lots and lots of people with LS and MVD dogs, and they can give you some tips to prepare your little fella for surgery, etc.... DogLiverDisease : Dog Liver Disease |

| I have applied to care credit but my total cost is going to be around $5000, I had already spent over $1000 at my vet because Jackson had to be on IV's and meds. Thanks for the information. |

I have no advise but lots of people have great information on LS here so you should at least get some help (and already have) I'm sorry to read about your little guys illness - it is treatable in most all cases but it's still a very tough thing to deal with

| He really did not show any symtoms until recently he torn up a puppy pad ended up at the vet due to excessive drooly and could not settle down. Was at the vet 3 days on IV antibiotics, anti-nausea meds. Had the bile acid test and was referred to Cornell where they did an additional test that confirmed the first test results. Somee of the symptoms are: drink alot of water, may be smaller than normal, have an enlarged liver, urinate more frequently, not as active as a dog without a shunt |

| WOW $5000 at Cornell. You might want to check into heading to the U of Tenn (Dr. Tobias). I have heard that LS surgery, scintography, all tests and meds, spay/neuter and baby teeth removal (approx. $1300 to $1800) Which is VERY cost effective compared to other places. There are actually a handful of people here on YT that made the trip (from TX or FL and even Cali) |

| Sending out prayers for Jackson. If surgery is needed or if they tell you he can be medically managed . . . he can still live a good and healthy life. |

| I'm sorry that Jackson has been diagnosed with liver shunt. Many of us here on YT have liver shunt and MVD babies and we are here to support you! My dog had BATs over 105 when we learned she had probable MVD. I have no first hand experience with Cornell or with UT but have heard wonderful things about both places. I'm sorry the cost is so high and I have read on here that UT is more cost effective. Please keep us posted. A good place also to post about this is on the sick and injured forum so it does not get buried here.

Portosystemic Shunts FAQ As long as people continue to buy from greeders, nothing will change. There are wonderful stickies pinned in the Yorkies for Sale section about how to find a reputable breeder. I wish more people would come to YT first, before they buy that puppy from a pet store, internet website or ad in their local newspaper. According to Dr. Center, all Yorkie puppies should have a bile acids test at 16 weeks and again at 6 months. http://www.ytca.org/health_CenterQue...xpress2010.pdf Dr. Center still recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a bile acids test before going to their new homes, even if that is a few weeks early. Buying a Yorkie puppy who has not had a BAT is setting yourself up for heartbreak and big vet bills.

| My Ozzie had surgery at UT in January for liver shunt and he is doing wonderful now. I live in Maryland so it was a long drive but for everything including neutering and pulling of baby teeth it was under $1800. You don't need a CT scan. They do about 10 of these surgeries a week there and they were wonderful. I can't say enough about them. Ozzie has gained over 3 pounds since his surgery and is like a different dog. Also there is a wonderful liver shunt support group that helps so much. They know more about liver shunts than most vets. Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support : Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support Ginger |
