You are so right, Villette. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with a liver shunt than all other breeds combined.

As long as people continue to buy from greeders, nothing will change. There are wonderful stickies pinned in the Yorkies for Sale section about how to find a reputable breeder. I wish more people would come to YT first, before they buy that puppy from a pet store, internet website or ad in their local newspaper.

According to Dr. Center, all Yorkie puppies should have a bile acids test at 16 weeks and again at 6 months.

Dr. Center still recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a bile acids test before going to their new homes, even if that is a few weeks early.

Buying a Yorkie puppy who has not had a BAT is setting yourself up for heartbreak and big vet bills.
