Doxycycline: Antibiotic For Dogs & Cats - 1800PetMeds here are the side effects Also it says not to give antacids within 2 hrs of this drug and she told you give pepcid a/c 30 minutes prior to this drug??? What should I avoid while giving Doxycycline: Antibiotic medications can cause diarrhea. If your pet develops diarrhea that is watery, or has blood in it, call your veterinarian. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless told to do so by your veterinarian. Doxycycline may make your pet's skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may occur. Do not give multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after giving doxycycline. What other drugs will affect Doxycycline: Tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given an antacid (Milk of Magnesia or Maalox), bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, or over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements, warfarin (Coumadin), a penicillin antibiotic (Amoxil, Trimox, Pen VK, dicloxacillin (Dynapen), carbenicillin (Geocillin), oxacillin (Bactocill), or others. There may be other medications that are not listed that can affect doxycycline. Tell your veterinarian about prescription and over-the-counter medications that are being given to your pet. This includes vitamins, minerals, and herbal products. Isn't pepcid A/C an antacid? So these two drugs together could have made this situation worse as well :( |
I'm sorry to hear Daisy has been so sick. Hopefully her numbers will continue to improve and she will be all better soon! I was curious about the doxycycline and it's side effects.....the "Vary Rare Side Effects" statement was copied from the linked article. Side Effects of Doxycycline for Dogs | eHow.com Very Rare Side Effects 5. "The Pill Book Guide to Medication for Your Dog and Cat" notes that the following symptoms rarely happen: the dog becomes more easily easily sunburned, gets liver damage or has changes to blood cells. |
All this information about side effects of Doxy is the same for adults. I was on it for maybe a month or so and it is very strong medicine. Like Dwerten posted, the prescription cautioned to wait a minimum of two hours for an antacid. The medicine changed my taste buds while I was on it too. All foods tasted very strange--like a metalic taste. I'm pretty sure that the meds would have worked for me but the side effects (especially EXTREME sun sensitivity) were too much for me to handle. The point of my long story is that if I reacted like that to the meds and had to stop it I really believe your Daisy is reacting to it as well. Now, since the antacid was given to her maybe that triggered a bad reaction. I'm so worried about your sweety. Prayers from us. |

No, Pepcid is not an antacid. Antacids are either a salt or another base and they reduce acids in the stomach. Pecid controls the production of acid, does not neutralize it as an antacid. |
