| ![]() I hope that your vet is able to figure out what is going on with Lucy. You sound like you are such a good momma to her and only want the very best for her care. Please keep us updated after she is seen. There might be something easily treatable with diet as Elle May suggested yesterday. It is very easy to make your mind run and assume the very worst. ![]()

what is the percentage of protein on the two things she ate prior to having those symptoms? Do you think it was a seizure she had when coming into your room with glazed look and back legs going out? usually seizure is spaced out look and then fall on the side and go stiff (petit mal) and then there is fly snapping and then there is convulsing (grand mal) The one that concerns me is walking on trail and then back legs giving out. The one in bed room could be seizure as when demi had petit mal she stared straight and was glazed but her whole body was stiff and she laid on side and went stiff. This was after rosemary chicken but 12 hrs after as dogs can seize from rosemary i found out. I have not seen a dog with mvd seizures but honestly with those numbers that low on bats i really doubt it. DD had higher numbers than that and she was on raw diet which is high protein and never acted like that but anything is possible. You could try to do 18% protein and give it a little time but if on 18% protein and this occurs with back legs again I would get to a neurologist. I hope it is just food related as that is an easy to fix Last edited by dwerten; 05-27-2010 at 08:06 AM.

OH, and she is a poop eater - though that has slowed down but she might have gotten some of Ringo's poop in the backyard yesterday; I just do not know. Have cleaned up back yard just in case. Lucy did not have a seizure as you describe with the stiff body and falling over. She does get the spaced out look; then she has difficulty standing on her back legs especially. She does not fall over stiff. I'm going to try to find that vegetarian food after work. She IS a picky eater and hence the canned food on top of her dry. But if I can find a little something to spice it up - like the baked cod - might work. Still waiting on the freaking vet to call me back!!! Usually he's fantastic about that. Off to check on Vet.

| ![]() Well, thank God. After reading two or three times that there was paralysis in Lucy, I got very upset and concerned. Thought that perhaps I had missed something. Wow, hope that vet calls soon!!

You can also go on liver shunt mvd groups and ask if their dogs have ever had the back legs give out as i have not seen that ever happen before in mvd and mine has mvd. Poop eating will not do it dd can be a poop eater too both dex and dd like demi poops hot off the press but we just keep her in room after she eats and she usually poops right after so we are more consciencious of it and try to avoid poop eating here - pineapple does work too but demi is so picky i have to trick her like it is cod to get her to eat the pineapple lol also not a fan of turkey diets in dogs either Last edited by dwerten; 05-27-2010 at 09:33 AM.

| ![]() Ok. Here is what the Vet said: he thinks I took her on too long of a walk (about a mile) in the heat and humidity last night and either her blood sugar dropped (shaking) or she got dehydrated - which can cause weakness and muscle cramping. He states that she can not walk as long as my Westie in this heat; she is too small; and to let her rest today and keep an eye on her. Of course, no more beef - though he thinks these could be two separate incidents. Keep an eye on her today; take her for a short walk tomorrow evening; monitor her during the walk and call him immediately for a blood glucose test if there is further weakness. That's it. Lordy. Sometimes I learn more here. I'll do the diet change on my own. I hope he knows what he's talking about. I will say he's taken excellent care of all my dogs and assures me he takes care of several liver dogs. I'm going to see if we have any internists around here. I live in WV so I am doubtful. Good news is - we are moving to Ohio and will be right by OSU if I need a specialist. |

Makes perfect sense to me! That really IS a long walk for a little one in the heat and humidity! Oh, living where there is good vet care is great! I remember years ago in NJ the closest EC was one hour away. That was so frightening if you had a sick pup. Finally, my vet started doing 24 hour care for his clients. ![]()

![]() that explains the walk but not the bedroom incident though so keep an eye on her do the lower protein and if there is another occurrence on low protein then I would have her further examined if she was mine by a neurologist Also on the long walk usually they pant alot and lay down legs do not really give out as we made that mistake walking ours too long and it was all three and they just layed down and we had to carry them. Was she panting alot? I would probably eliminate walks and see if this happens again without walks and lower protein as you want to make sure nothing else is going on to be safe.

| ![]() Did she go on a long walk before the bedroom incident? How long was the walk on the trail? If cramping though I would think she would not have got up and walked more afterwards would have just laid down for you to hold her - just my take as that is what my dogs did but they may be just lazy dogs loll. at any rate keep an eye on her eta just saw it was a mile - and we walked ours two when they all laid down lolll ![]() Last edited by dwerten; 05-27-2010 at 10:06 AM. |
