| Scabby Bumps My little terror has small scabby bumps all over recently. He gets brushed and groomed regularly. I just gave a bath with a very good amount of Oatmeal Shampoo. He is 7 years old, has eaten Iams Mini Chunks his entire life. Any ideas? |

| Yes, I would suggest you take him to a vet. Could be any number of things.

| Why would you reply by telling me to go to the vet? I am trying to find a solution without going to the vet. Thats like the auto forum, telling me to take my car to a mechanic. How useless of a reply was that? |

I also do not know why you find it so odd that someone would suggest a vet for a pup with "scabby bumps all over". It sounds pretty involved and I think I gave you good advice. Sorry to have offended you with a suggestion to do something that I myself would do. This is not an auto forum....I think if you were talking about a car it would be quite different. Welcome to YT by the way!

| Perhaps this thread will help you to understand why I suggested you take your pup to a vet! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-all-over.html

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome . I do agree w/ ladyjane. Some of the reasons you want to get to a vet asap is bc you've described scabs / bumps all over. Again, this is going to sound vague - but this could be SO many things! It needs to be seen. If this is pyoderma or fungal - you'll need a prescription - you can't treat it yourself. To diagnose this, a vet would probably first do a skin scraping and look immediately under scope (looking for bacteria) - it would then also be a good idea to grow a sample out in culture to check for fungal infection (takes 10-14 days). Skin is an elimination organ, so skin issues - esp. scabs all over - are no small matter. It is a sign that something could be very wrong, and needs to be diagnosed and treated by a vet. Please keep us posted!

| We say, "Go to the vet" often here because we are not vets and cannot diagnose. Sometimes there are things that can be tried at home first (like changing foods when a food allergy is suspected, etc), but this does not appear to be one of those things. When you get a diagnosis, somebody here may have dealt with it and be better able to help.

| I guess I am a little taking back by your rudeness as a new member. We do not have vets here at YT and while we can give suggestions for the safety of your dog or anyone's dogs, people should always refer to a vet. Having these little critters is not cheap and something like a skin problem should be seen by a vet. Hopefully you have spent a little more time on YT and see what a wonderful place it is and that we have some very knowledgeable people here on taking the best possible care you can for your little one. I am sure you are trying to do what is best for your dog and that it doesn't just boil down to $$$$.

| due to age of your yorkie I would have a thyroid panel done as this can be a sign of hypothyroid and it runs in this breed. This can be sebaceous gland excretion and dogs with thyroid issues can have skin issues so if this was my dog i would have a thyroid panel done, cbc panel and a skin culture done that would be a good start make sure when doing thyroid panel they do a complete 6 panel which is t4free, t4, t3free, t3, t4aa and t3aa the vet will probably do a cytology at office and look under microscope there at office but If they see bacteria you may want to have a culture sent to a lab to find the right antibiotic if it is staph. can you post a pic of it so we can see if we have seen this on our dog? that sometimes can help Last edited by dwerten; 01-27-2010 at 05:27 PM. |

| are the scabs greasy and crusty? that can be sebaceous gland excretion are there red bumps under the scabs if so that is more like a staph infection. has your dog had skin issues in the past or is this something new that popped up and how long have the bumps been there? I personally like dermatologists for skin issues you end up saving money in the long run as they get to the problem faster many times but I would do the blood work with vet |

I definitely agee to not freak out and bring your baby to the vets for every little thing - but after a while if things are not clearing up - a trip to the vet is definitely in order. Good Luck!!

also get duoxo chlorhexedine shampoo and bath once a week with it as that will kill topically while antibiotics will kill from internal. | |
