Default Yorkie with scabs all over

Thanks in advance
I'm losing my 12 year old Yorkie 1 day at a time, she has scabs all over her, nobody seams to be able to tell us whats wrong, the vets don't know, we have switched food thinking allergies, we have had antibiotics, we have used many different shampoos, oinments, but the scabs keep multiplying, shes losing weight, no energy, she is still eating good, I would like to see if someone in South Florida knows of a vet school where many people can look at her and possibly somebody might find an answer before shes gone.
Thanks
Arthur

I am so very sorry to hear about your little one. I hope that you can find out what it is and that it is easily treatable. Could it be flea bites? or an allergic reaction to bites from fleas?

It sounds like mange to me. Has she possibly been around other dogs that she may have caught it from? I think there are different kinds of mange. There are also dips for some kinds of mange that you can get from the vet. You need to go to a vet that can diagnose this problem. It surely didn't develop all over her suddenly, did it?

It does sound a lot like mange/mites. Did your vet scrape the skin and test for mange? Lice? I had a little dog years ago with mange, and the treatments alone about killed her as it is a stong pesticide dip they have to use to treat it to kill the mites. It was not a fun process, and I had to watch her go through three treatments of that stuff. I know that dog lice is specific to dogs, but I am not so sure about mange. It seems like my vet told me humans could get mange from their dog, but I could be wrong on that. Something to check in to. If your vet does not know what this is maybe you should go to a different vet. Mange should be fairly easy to diagnose.

Default Yorkie with scabs

Response to all replys
jeanm19632: they said no to mange, they thought mites, but we treated for mites, I'm not sure if it was the proper treatment and yes we do give her a little benedryl, not all the time though, I don't know if they scaped the skin, it's been a combination of me taking her in and my wife also, we are tired of spending money with no results.
Wylie's mom: no cultures, I'll call and see if I can afford it, I would love to find a solution and no on the vet dermatologist, I didn't know they had doggie dermos.
Yorkieusa: No on around other dogs except for our other Yorkie she is younger and she is fine.
Thanks all
Arthur

get to a dermatologist have a skin culture done as this sounds like staph to me and it also sounds to me like your dog due to age is hypothyroid so you need to have a full thyroid panel there are six values T4, T4FREE, T3, T3FREE, T4AA, T3AA

My dog has staph right now and it can be nasty - it takes 25 days on an antibiotic and the best one is simplicef as that usually kills it and you can bath with duoxo chlorhexedine shampoo as well to kill topically.

we go to a dermatologist and they know more than vets about skin conditions

another thing someone on here recommended that worked for another dog but due to mine having allergies i was too afraid is steeping chamomille tea let it cool then poor into a water jug and use distilled water - make sure cool water then do a rinse and leave on do not wash off as tea kills infections in the skin - another lady on here her dog had blisters on the back and it killed it fast - i was to nervous as my girl is allergic to alot of stuff

I really do not think this is mites bc if it was sarcoptic mange you would get it and if demodex your dog would have had that since a pup since it comes from the mama dog

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...lood-work.html

look at the info i posted and look at pic of my dog with staph does this look the same - basically staph is red bumps with crusties on top of it and they start to lose their hair as well if it gets bad enough

the derm did a skin culture sent to lab and it was $130 - if you do not want to pay and your vet has not used simplicef i would recommend simplicef for 25 days to fully kill the infection

also real important i would get your dog on probiotics ASAP as that will put good bacteria into the body while you are killing the bad as your dogs system is out of balance. I use this one and i am doing 4 capsules a day and when not on antibiotics i do 2 - i stopped in feb of 2009 and that is when she got staph so i know it works now as she was on it for 2 years no issues even with horrible allergies

Dds-Plus Capsules by U.A.S.Laboratories - UA-1010 - at The Vitamin Shoppe

it is non-dairy so will not upset the stomach

I had a Norfolk mixed Terrier who began with only one scab like bump on his
back around the age of 7yrs. They multiplied fast. I took him from one vet
to the next. One said allergies, other's had no idea. One vet put him on
a steriod called azium and he became addited to it. After a couple of years,
by now he was covered I went to a Holistic vet and even she couldn't
find the problem. It was not mange or cancer. He itched and it broke my
heart. When he was put down, due to renal failure there was hardly a spot
on his entire body that didn't have a bumpy scab. I couldn't even pet him.
It was so sad but he lived for 16yrs. I gave him oatmeal baths often to
help relive the itching.
That's why I bought a prue breed this time and enjoy petting him
50x daily because I couldn't do that to my last dog. I pray I never have
to go threw anthing like that again.
I wish you luck and pray for your little one.

PS He never got off the azium. When I cut it down he would
itch worse and he could never come off of it due to side effects.
He was hooked on this drug that helped I guess with itching
but it sure did not help the scabby bumps.

Sorry to hear about your baby. My pom had what sounds like the same symptoms. She had scab like spot all over and they would peel off and be raw underneath, lost weight but had a great appetite, lethargic and also drank a lot of water. After many tests and treating her for Thyroid disease with no improvement I took her to a dermatologist and she was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. She was almost 10 and lived another 2 years with treatment. I would ask your vet to either test for that or recommend a dermatologist or internist. I hope you can get some answers soon.
