Strange round skin growth I just noticed it today when I was petting my yorkie and doing a routine check. With the weather getting colder now, and hardly have taken my yorkie out much, I have to admit I have not checked him as often as I should have. However, the skin growth is really strange- I can tell its irritated as the part that its protruding from is red. So I'm thinking it might be a tick. I tried taking a photo with my camera but cannot get a good photo. Any ideas? I'm taking him to the vet as soon as I get home from work tmw.

So it was a tick! Figured out that it was a tick. I was grossed out thinking that my yorkie might crawl into bed with me with that thing on him, I had him sleep in his travel bag zipped up. I was planning on buying the tool needed to remove the tick later today after work, but to my surprise, this morning when I let him out of the bag to eat, I checked the area again and its gone?!?! I figured it must of had its fill and fallen off inside the bag. Not wanting to mess with with it this morning I zipped the bag back up and threw it outside (we had a really cold snap last night, so I hope it dies). Meanwhile, I check my yorkie to see if perhaps it had moved. Nothing. (I pray its in the bag). I did find the wound area though. It had blood and hard crusty blood over the remains of the wound. I ripped it out, which I think was the head. Any idea? I've never dealt with anything like this before. Given that my yorkie hardly ever goes out the room, I think its strange he got a tick. It worries me since its my bed room, is there an army of them? Do I need to get vet checked? Do I need to put him on antibiotics?

It has been raining crazy here too. Why does that produce more ticks?

Haha I actually have no idea! But here are some tips that help with our tick problem. -When you take him out, stay away from bushes and really wooded areas, there are tons of ticks in there. -When you come back inside, brush him all over, this will help you find ticks that he may have picked up while outside. -Get in a habit of checking for little bumps when you are cuddling with him. You can feel them in their fur before they get to that huge, engorged size like you found. Oh, and are you using anything for flea/tick prevention?

| Being in Florida, me and my friends with dogs are having a hard time with ticks this year. We all use flea/tick prevention meds but they seem to latch on anyway. As soon as I removed the tick, I swabbed the area with rubbing alcohol. You can at least do that until you can take your baby to the vet. It takes a lot for ticks to die so if I were you, I'd wash the carrier in hot water or at least spray it with flea & tick spray. I hope this is the end of your tick problem.

I believe it was an american dog tick, as my vet had suggested. Do these pose any threat to humans? I cannot find the little bugger after he released himself from Bender, but knowing Bender he may have ate the tick Bender hardly ever goes outside, especially when the rain we've had. Maybe once every 2 days or so. He has a litter box and only goes outside every now and then to get fresh air. I'm thinking, my roommate often brings over friends (who live out in the country) and they might bring the ticks on them?!?! Crazy idea? I want to eliminate as many chemicals as I can so I don't use any kinds of prevention. I gave him a good long bath and comed his hair like crazy to make sure there werent any left.
