| Update We are now back home in KY! The ride was fine and Ginger ended up getting in my lap and sleeping most of the way home. I have attached some videos of when Max and Molly first saw her. They were so excited. Shew, let me tell you! You don't realize how many random kibbles you have on the floor until you hear them crunching on it and you are like "oh no, where did she get that?!" So I have been on my hands and knees trying to pick up any kibble that she is not allowed to have. She is perky and very investigative. Because I am somewhat anxious, I will be limiting some of her "free roam" time (which is good since she is a puppy anyway). For those who are familiar with the dry RC HLS 14 food, how much should I be giving her? What I have calculated is around 3.0 oz a day (it doesn't look like much). The back of the bag says 3/4c for a 5lb dog. She is exactly 2.0lb. I figured that I would make sure she is eating at least the 3oz. If she isn't, I will suppliment with a syringe. What if she wants more food, is that ok? Sorry, just trying to pick some of your alls brains. Ginger is willing to eat the dry Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 food! HOORAY!! The syringe feeding was no fun! Here is a video of Max and Molly seeing Ginger for the 1st time. Sorry the quality is very poor (cell phone). And here are some pictures of her this morning. The first two, she is in her carrier and is whining to get out... and the last one is after breakfast. She says hello to everyone!

| You need to spread the amount of kibble thru out the day. Most LS babies do best with 6 meals and this may mean into the late night. Start our on the minimal amount. If you find she is still hungry, increase her kibble by 1 or 2 pieces each time. Her actions will tell you if she is getting too much protein. |

This may sound anal, but I THINK she needs about 3oz... which is exactly 100 pieces of kibble. So if that is divided into 6 feedings, she will need to be 16-17 pieces of kibble during each feeding. What I may do is put down 17 pieces of kibble and if she has not eaten it by the 4 hour mark, I will sit down with her and try to encourage her. When it is eaten, I will go ahead and put down 17 more pieces so that she can either nibble on it over the next 4 hours or just eat the rest of it at the next 4 hour mark (does that make sense?). It may sound tedious, but I don't mind. It will give me a better idea on how much she really is eating. If she wants more, I will add 1-2 kibbles, like you suggested. Thanks. Quote:
Another thing. I don't want everyone to think that Max and Molly was NOT tested. They were last year (before I got them). It had not been a full year since their tests that I bred them so I didn't feel as though it was needed again (maybe I was wrong?). Both of the BATs were normal last year. I wonder if they could've changed much over the year? I will be having them tested again in the next few months just to make sure. The research that Dr. Tobias has is fascinating. I read that she took 2 dogs that had liver shunts, repaired them, bred them and they produced 2 healthy pups. I sure hope they are able to find a genetic marker in her research study to help prevent liver shunts from ever happening in the future. And don't worry, we are totally keeping her! DH even agrees this time even though now we will have 4 dogs and 2 cats! lol

| Robin, I am so very sorry to hear the sad saga of Ginger. It does sound like she is a fighter, which is a huge plus for you. If she decides that she won't eat the Hills LD food or the dry kibble, you might check with your vet about home cooking. Hills has home cooked version recipe for ALL of their specialty foods that they make available to vets. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Robin, it is hard to believe that is the same child...errrr, I mean puppy! Wow! Precious footage of her reunion with Max and Molly! I had also been thinking that this is the way it worked out so you could have a puppy. Funny how life works out sometimes, huh? I am so glad you are home and Ginger is home. Ahhhhhh...you are some kind of good mommy, girlfriend...you "did" good! |
