He is eating RC Gastro formula now but the vet wants to put him on Iams Low-Residue which makes me nervous as Iams isn't the best food. If it helps though I guess that is good. The vet also said to give him some probiotics. Once he has been on that for a couple of weeks they are going to do more tests for liver and pancreas to see if he is absorbing his food. He hasn't lost any weight so I think it is just a food issue, at least that is what I hope it is.

trust your gut and do not let them tell you to do endoscopy -- just narrow down the food -- if he was mine i would put him on venison and sweet potato for 12 weeks as sweet potato is anti-inflammatory and it is a limited ingredient diet

many yorkies have ibd per our vet as well as seeing this on here and having a yorkie with ibd honest kitchen is a good food but i prefer the preference and adding in cod protein if using it as many of their formulas have chicken

digestive enzymes are good but i still have a question mark on them as you want the pancreas to function on its own and sometime supplementing things stops the body from doing it on its own so i prefer to let the body work naturally so i am still 50 /50 on digestive enzymes as that is the pancreas job

oh and HGE is very noticeable it is bloody clumpy diarhea like raspberry jam and dogs can get it over and over -- it is tied to salmonella or ecoli from food in many cases so why you have to be careful feeding raw - this disease is deadly if not handled immediately as the red blood cell count increases rapidly and then shuts down the organs so if you ever see clumpy bloody diarhea get your dog in fast on fluid therapy and amporal i believe is what they use - they can also get it from coming in contact with a dead animal in the yard and it is NOT contagious to your other dogs fyi

also once they get it they can easily get it over and over

best to try to do it without drugs though -- i would use probiotics before doing anything like imodium. If you get the right diet you will not need the meds and i would if needing to use any med if probiotics and diet alone cannot cure it then i would use tylan powder as that is a very low dose antibiotic with an anti-inflammatory agent in it so it will help ibd dogs

Bailey was diagnosed with IBD this last February and has been up and down since. We put here on Tylan powder which really seemed to help. We weened her off that and put her on sucralfate twice a day. That helps coat her stomach to keep her from getting nausea. But she still has her ups and downs. We feed her ground turkey breast and red potatoes with Royal Canin Low Digestive Fat canned food. I don't think we still found the magical food combination. Any ideas?

nope you have not found the right combo as the potatos are inflammatory and are making her sick as that inflames the intestines so stop all white potato in diet and go to a more grain diet if need be as ibd dogs do better on white rice diets than potato - i strongly recommend venison and sweet potato by natural balance as sweet potato is anti-inflammatory - do that food for 12 weeks and i bet you see a difference and no meds

Tylan is VERY SAFE for long term, so my advice is, since Tylan works, I would go back to that daily

Ugh my dog has the same types of sensitive stomach issues that have been described by other contributing members of this post. It seems that the problem is only stopped temporarily and then something happens. For example, the vet had misdiagnosed my dog initially until I demanded further review and an xray, and it was determinined that she had pancreatitis. The vet was feeding her Purina EN wet food which I continued to do and it worked for awhile. I decided to switch to chicken and Science Diet sensitive stomach dry food which also worked very well until recently. Guess I'm goin back to the Purina...I guess these dogs are notorious for these gastrointestinal upsets eh?

Thanks for the recommendation. Is the natural balance venison/sweet potato a canned food? Bailey is 5 and is very finicky but I will try anything if she gets well. I feel so bad when I give her something and she gets nauseated.

Do you thik Tylan Powder is better than Sucralfate? I was told by my vet that she will have her good days and bad and that is exactly the way it is. I wish I could fix it long term. I'm also going to try the venison/sweet potato if my vet thinks its okay.

vets do not know much about nutrition they just do what hill's tells them yes tylan has anti-inflammatory in the antibiotic - sulcrulfate just coats the stomach to prevent ulcers not really a must for ibd dogs and it is pepto bismal without the aspiring content

yes they are - my boy is on purina ha and doing well on it - chicken will mess them up as chicken is an allergent to ibd and allergy dogs
