"I am scared to death, HELP!" My ABU is normally a very fun loving excited puppy. He is five mo. old. Weighing 2.6 lbs. I noticed two days ago before we were going to leave for a trip that he was lying still in his crate and not moving, I tried to coax him out and he just laid there. So i grabbed him, and picked him up, his eyes were closed. I tried to wake him and I opened his eyes all i saw was white and they were rolled back. Immediately I got my karo syrup and put some on his tongue he was half awake, rolling around and walking funny, lethargic. I was thinking maybe hypoglycemia, but I have him on a diet of Royal Canin (which i hear is one of the best) (and stinking expensive!!! grr) But i would do anything for this little pup. I also have nutri-cal that i give him. The vet ran everything, his temp was normal, urinalysis, bloodwork, fecal, catheter, iv's, etc. Said he was malnourished etc.? I was apalled, because I have tried so hard to give him syrup and make sure he drinks and eat, lately I have just laid out his food in the bowl after I heat it up a little w/ some water, also dry food during the day. The vet told me nutrical every two hours and prescription canned food every four...prescription science diet, A/D and pedialyte. So i keep shoving everything down his poor little throat, (he just hates it) (syringe) He seems ok for a little while, but still so tired and his eyes slowly close. IS he just tired and worn out, stressed from me pressuring him to eat? right now he is just pacing the floor back and forth up and down. He had a little bit of gas yesterday and finally had a BM today after nothing yesterday...I really am scared..he's the sweetest. His gums are pink...i don't know what to do!!!! Also how much do i feed him? i am at least 3 times a day but how much food would u say? Last edited by mersadiesj; 08-28-2009 at 12:02 AM. Reason: concerns

You should keep on the feeding schedule your vet has him on. I would feed maybe 1/3 can a day or so but someone may suggest better. MAKE SURE HE GETS EVERYTHING HE'S SUPPOSED TO. A Hypoglycemic attack can take weeks to recover from. If his gums are Pink and temp is good I would go ahead and just make sure he Stays warm and keep his feeding schedule going. If he continues schedule a follow up with your vet and have them look at him once more to make sure he's recovering fully. If his gums get white, he is lethargic, vomiting or disorientated I'd take him to the vet immediately as he is still very small and can go downhill very fast if the signs are not recognized quickly.

If your vet thinks he is malnourished, I wonder if you have been giving him too much Karo Syrup? At five months old, his blood sugar should be pretty stable. Karo, Nutrical, etc. raise the blood sugar quickly when it drops too low, but can kill the appetite so it shouldn't be over used. Think of it as eating a candy bar every couple of hours. You wouldn't have much appetite for healthy meals, would you? The problem with Karo is that while it raises the blood sugar temporarily, they will just crash again unless they get a good meal of protein and carbohydrates. It creates a vicious cycle of blood sugar highs and lows. His bloodwork was normal?

Has you baby had his BAT done? Some of his symptoms may sound a little like liver shunt. I would at least ask the vet. Good luck - prayers coming your way ~~~

at the university vet hospital ;( I took him right away at 4 am to the emergency animal clinic. They had no idea what was going on. his stool was soft...no temp and glucose was normal.. They thought it was either neurological or the liver...So...next clinic at 7 am.... glucose was normal everything was fine...except his partial blindness and swaying...back and forth..(poor little thing) They suggested I take him to University of Illinois hospital...so an hour and a half later drive...another vet visit....and now he has to stay for the weekend...suggesting liver shunt...anyone had this procedure done ??? How has your puppy performed after and when did you see him back to normal...also procedure costs? They estimated ..over night stay...tests...and shunt etc. to be 2-4000 dollars. AAAAAGH...but of course..i don't care how much it cost as long as he is healthy...it's sad to think people would put the poor pup down for cost reasons...anyways...thanks for your responses...i really appreciate it..i don't think i've slept in 3 days over this poor baby...

this is my thought as a vet said hypoglycemic and liver shunt go hand in hand. Alt can be normal and bats off so i would do bile acid testing asap as sounds like liver shunt to me

My baby had liver shunt surgery in March and is doing GREAT. The best advice I can give you is to join - Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support : Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support they have more answers and information than anywhere. I feel they helped me save my baby's life when she was sick and diagnosed with liver shunt. I was so scared and knew nothing about this "disease"...she is like a normal little puppy today, so please don't give up hope. Get him on the right diet immediately, get him on lactulose and try to educate yourself about LS as much as you can. The people on the group above are very helpful and experienced; sometimes you have to be persistant with your questions! You are doing a great job so far, what a lucky baby that he has you as a mom and that you've done as much as you have! Please continue to ask questions - that's how we all learn! Yorkie kisses and prayers coming your way ~~~ Valerie, "Lola & Harley"
