Animal Smiley 036 Truman's ears

So I am sure you all know the story of Truman and I have to say he really looks great except his ears....... When he first came home to me his ears were very infected and he also has a growth in his left ear which was removed. His hair on his body looks great, shiny and very think all the mats are gone. The anal gland adenoma has even gone away since his neuter and the hair has even starting to grow back across the bridge of his nose so that is not even a problem any longer.

*But his ears pretty much no hair on the lower half, have a slight scaling and along the edges he grows little fluffs of fuzz that I can pull off easily with my fingers. I haven't had him back to the vet recently and before I take him again I was wondering if this could be leather ear? I have heard about this before but never have seen it or how it is treated. Any suggestions or input would be wonderful! I do need to stop at the vets tomorrow to pick up his meds and plan to ask but wanted a little info before I go.

I come to this board all the time and offer advice and help as much as I possibly can. Hardly ever do I post any questions or concern about any of my pets and always try to be as helpful as I possibly can be.

I cannot believe that 30 people looked at my post and not 1 person could respond with any type of advice! That just SUCKS!

I am just seeing this sorry. I'm not sure what leather ear looks like but when my pom got what you described on her neck it was bacterial infections fron her low immine system. Antibiotics helped clear it up. Hope Truman's is something minor.

I'm so sorry!! I confess to being one of those who read your post and didn't respond (I don't know anything about leather ear). I was actually just checking in this morning to see what the vet said! {hugs}

What was the infection he had in his ears that you treated? I don't know what to make of it...is it "oily" where the scales are, or dry? Is there a smell?

This is the derm. I went to for the boys - if you click on FAQs - you will see actual patient cases along with *very* helpful pictures...maybe this will help you i.d. something: Dermatology Clinic for Animals

I'm sorry that I was a little crabby this morning.
The way the vet explained his ear infection was just from lack of dental hygiene and infection in his teeth. This was months ago and his inner ear has totally cleared up. He had skin breakdown from his matted coat and that has healed as well with a second topical and oral antibiotic treatment about a month ago. It wasn't until his last grooming that I really noticed that his ear hair was not coming in like the rest of his coat but oddly around the edges it was growing. But I am able to easily pull this growth out in clumps. His ears are a little scaly but I would not say that is it is oily. He has hair at the top of his ears but toward the bottom half there just isn't any real hair growth almost like peach fuzz. I believe that I read somewhere that if they have the large patch of missing hair across the bridge of their nose that this is also a sign of a fungal infection but I have nothing else to go on but believe they are related to each other. The missing nose hair is now growing back very nicely but the ear hair is not.

I wasn't able to get him into the vet yesterday. My relatively new car was in the shop AGAIN without air conditioning. I am going there in a little while and hopefully get some answers.

LOL...that's okay...I get crabby too, girl !

You could ask for a fungal culture (takes 10-14 days) - and he could also look at a sample/smear under scope. The Derm. told me that ALL skin issues can only fall into 2 categories: allergies -or- secondary to illness. Do you think it was allergy related...ie, had he been scratching at those ears?

No he is not scratching at all. He's just Truman and doesn't do a whole lot of complaining...just hangs around. I did have him on Purina Pro Plan when he was so underweight, then I started to mix with NB Sweet potato and Venison kibble. When they are so use to either bad food or in his case NO FOOD at all it is hard to get them to switch to something really good for them. At the time I was so desperate to get him to eat ANYTHING because he was so starved and underweight that he was falling over. But in the last month I have slowly weaned him off the Pro Plan and now he gets the NB mixed with pumpkin and Evangers 100% venison. I was watching Animal Planet over the weekend and if you can even imagine he looked like one of the dogs they show on Animal Cops that are dying from starvation~he was that skinny and sick! But he has gained 5 lbs and looks great now. It might be an allergy because we all know that Pro Plan isn't the best for them. But I do think I might have to ask for a scrapping to see what the vet thinks. He had so many other things wrong with him when I got him that his ear hair or actually lack of hair was not something I was worried about. But now I look at him and he is just about perfect execpt his bald little ears.

Hi. Sorry I don't know Truman's story .. I am concerned with the flaking/scaling on the edges of his ears. My vet said she found where Yorkies are prone to getting Scabies and it starts just along the edges of the ears. In a dog that was so severely stressed, that would be suspect. Can easily be tx'd with Revolution, which I believe is safer to do than weekly toxic dips. Sometimes skin scrapings miss the critters.

Along the edges of his ears he actually has hair growing but I was able to pull it out with very little effort. It is in the middle part of his ears that his hair is not really growing and more so on the side that was very infected and had lots of drainage when I pulled him out of the shelter. I did talk to the vet and he suggested that I use half vinegar and half water to wipe his ears twice a day and twice a week to use Selsun Blue shampoo people shampoo just on his ears. I have already been doing this for several days and it seem like the edges are now holding onto the hair were before I was able to pull the hair out easily. I am going to keep my fingers cross that this will work and see how it goes and I will report back in a few weeks with the results. He has such a cute face and I would love to see his have scruffy little ears full of hair to frame it. Thank everyone that responded.
