| How to deal... So I am so sad about my Layla I just don't know what to do. She has a liver shunt and since she hasn't showed symptoms until now they think for sure it is an internal shunt. I would have to spend $600 to do the ultra sound, then the surgery for atleast $2,500. That's what the Vets are telling us. She will be 9 in December, so I am so upset to think she won't be here for that much longer. All the information I have read has said that dogs who don't have surgery and are only medically managed typically are put down within 10 months of diagnosis. Does anyone know anything different. I can't afford the surgery. |

| I'm so sorry. Oakland Referral can do an ultrasound for much less but they are only 60-80% accurate. University of Tennessee is one of the leaders in liver shunt and surgery there is considerably cheaper (under $2000 with diagnostics), so some people travel and have it done there. What are her symptoms? How do they know it's a shunt instead of MVD (small shunting throughout the liver that is inoperable)?

| I'm curious as to how they've diagnosed it as a shunt as well? If all you've done is a bile acid test and it came back high, that doesn't diagnose anything other than liver disease. However, you can not determine the type of liver disease without further testing. A liver shunt is usually diagnosed with diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound (although not always accurate), portogram, or scintigraphy. If a shunt isn't seen, then it could be Hepatic Microvascular Dysplasia or another type of liver disease...all of which can be diagnosed with a liver biopsy. University of Tennessee is one of the best for diagnosing and correcting shunts, and to my knowledge they are also one of the cheapest. I'm so sorry about your baby. I hope you can find a solution

| RIP Layla.......... My very special little girl was put down yesterday at 1:30. She had gotten worse again and then had a seizure. We took her into the Vet and they gave her an enema. She showed us how to do it and we went home. Right when we got home she had another seizure. Then 20 minutes later she had another seizure that never really ended. We knew it was time and we had talked about maybe putting her down next weekend because my boyfriend and I both had the day off. Also the Vet we liked would of been working. But Layla wasn't going to make through a whole week. I couldn't believe it. We rushed her in and they got her all ready for it. She seemed at peace with it even though I was a litlle bit of an basket case. I knew this is what she wanted because she wasn't really all there anymore. We will love her and miss her always. She was a great little girl and I can't wait to see her again. |
