Layla GME? Today the Vet thinks Layla has GME. Does anyone know anything about it? Or it's symptoms?

I am so sorry about the diagnosis. I am glad you are close to the MSU vet school, though. Layla will get the best care possible there. There is information on GME on the Yorkie Angel Patrol website: gme

Layla doesn't have GME... Layla doesn't have GME, she has a liver shunt. I am still in shock, but for some reason feel comfort in knowing it's not GME. She still acts a little weak. They say she might only live for up to one more year, but they don't really know. She isn't a candidate for surgery so she was put on medication to help with her symptoms. The Vet said the goal is to control the symptoms for a good life until the end. Thank you to everyone who helped me through this last weekend and your prayers.

Did they do a Acid Bile Test on her? How did they diagnose her? She needs to be on a Very Low PROTEIN diet. Here is some information for you... Low Protein Food Natural Balance Vegetarian ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* PetGuard Organic Vegetarian ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* Avoderm Vegetarian ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* For dogs with highly elevated bile acids, and/or neurological symptoms, controlling the amount and type of protein is very important. Only 2 grams of protein per kg. of your dog's weight are recommended for severely affected pets for the day. This can be gradually increased if your pet doesn't have symptoms after one or two weeks. 4-6 small meals are recommended Water added to food is recommended to help prevent formation of crystals and stones and is a must for dogs that have had stones already. Recommended prescription foods: Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 (prescription) this food is available at Banfield's/Petsmart or can be ordered through your vet. www.southernagricul ture.com also carries it One cup has an average of 16 grams of protein. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* Hills's canned L/D is recommended and has about 16 grams of protein per can. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* Do NOT use raw diet. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* Any meat is more difficult to metabolize and will cause more toxins to build up in their systems. The effects of a meat diet may not be obvious at first, but over weeks or months can result in UTI, bladder stones, or even seizures in some dogs. Soy and dairy protein are easier to metabolize and will cause the least toxins to build up. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* If your pet isn't eating or has vomiting, you can give PediaSure-Vanilla flavor with fiber every couple of hours. One 8oz. bottle of PediaSure has 7 grams of protein in it. Other Items you can feed your dog in moderation for diet variation: Apple bits (no skin) Watermelon Potatoes (not for dogs with kidney issues) Pasta (can add a little low sodium chicken broth to this) Noodles Organic Plain flavored Yogurt (with live active cultures like Stonyfield brand) No sodium cottage cheese (Friendship) has 2% sodium Low sodium Goat cheese (if 3% sodium or less)Redwood Hill Farm/plain Low fat cottage cheese (only about a teaspoon) OR Cabot brand which has live acidophilus and bifidus. Sweet potatoes (not for dogs with neurological symptoms) Egg whites(scrambled, hard boiled, etc.)one egg white has about 3.5 grams of protein (Do not give egg yolks) NEVER GRAPES OR RAISINS! Cheerios (not for dogs with neurological symptoms or those that have had bladder stones) Veggies - lightly steamed as dogs have a hard time digesting them raw - Green/string beans also a viable choice. Hope this will help you...Good luck God Bless and please keep us updated
