| Purple belly Hello YTers, Any ideas on this one? I tried to search the forums, but the search did not run because the keywords were too common. I Googled it too, and was able to rule out a few things. About London London is a 3-year-old female weighing 6 lbs. She was spayed 8 weeks ago. Symptoms Her whole belly (including nipples) has been purple for 3-4 weeks. During this time she has also been peeing less frequently, about once a day. Previously, belly was pink and she urinated 2-3 times daily. What I've tried/considered There does not seem to be any pain when I touch the area. The purple does not wash off with a bath. She has not been laying on newspaper either. Nothing has changed with her drinking water situation at home. Fresh water in a clean bowl is available at all times, including overnight. She has been eating a few berries that fall off trees in the neighborhood...I'm going to try to figure out what kind of tree and make sure it's safe. Other than that, no changes in her diet. It has been snowy here lately and we've been going on lots of walks. Maybe a reaction to salt on the sidewalks? I wipe her off after every walk. Also I washed her bedding materials for the first time with Woolite, and rinsed with water a second time. Maybe a reaction to Woolite? A friend said it's not uncommon for nipples to turn color after spaying, and to pee less often after spaying. Google said could be part of normal pigmentation change at this age. London is acting completely normal, happy, and playful, so I haven't been too worried. Should I be? Still working on attaching belly pics. |

| I have no experience with this or suggestions, the only thing I can think of is calling the vet and speaking to them? Has she had a check up after the spay? |

YT 1000 Club Member | I really don't know anything about this, but one thing crossed my mind and that is wondering if the vet used iodine on the skin before making the incision. I would think it would have warn off by now but it was just a thought. |

| Thanks for the ideas! London did get a post-spay checkup 3 weeks after surgery, to remove stitches. Everything seemed fine then. Maybe I will call the vet. Only reason I haven't done that already is, the vets around here are not very knowledgeable about small dogs. Usually I get an unofficial diagnosis and treatment suggestions from the fabulous YTers, and share that info with the vet. That's not how the system is supposed to work, but sadly it's the only way to get good care around here! |

| Since she was just spayed, could it be some type of hormonal change??? |

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | Gosh, I don't know.....originally I was thinking that maybe an artery that supplies blood to the the skin of the belly got nicked during surgery, but I think if that were the case, her belly would have been turning purple within just a few days and not weeks after...... My bet is that it does have something to do with hormone changes post-spay and her age. Maybe there's still someone out there in YT-land that has had this experience and can be of more help. As it stands, I'd call the vet just to ask since you haven't yet. He may have no clue, but then again, this may be something he's run into before.....never know!

| Update The vet who specializes in cats called back. I was hoping the doggy specialist would call, but no luck. Anyway, the cat lady gave the standard schpiel that she really can't help without seeing London with her own eyes. (I'd be happy to bring her for an office visit if I thought this vet would actually have helpful advice.) She did say it wouldn't hurt to try topical hydrocortisone cream (same stuff humans use). I am making an appointment for a better vet that is farther away, but will probably take a few days. Thanks all for your comments and support. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...the pics don't really look abnormal, but it's hard to tell for sure. If she is really peeing only once a day, I'd be pretty concerned about that. Her hormonal changes could be causing some skin issues/discoloration. I wonder if some folks on the breeder section might know about this issue?
