| Severe Seborrhea on my German Shepherd's back I just posted this on another forum. Sorry for the duplication. Severe Seborrhea on my German Shepherd's back Poor Ivan is having a horrible time with seborrhea on his back. As many of you know we moved and have had to get a new vet. This vet prescribed a different medicated shampoo for Ivan and said it was the same as what we were using. Well, judging from the condition of Ivan's back I'd say "NOT". I've been all over the Internet looking for a shampoo that will help this poor creature. Does anyone know of a good strong brand and where I can buy it? We were using Sebohex. Ivan also has severe hip dysplegia and is never out of pain although he tolerates it pretty well. I just hate seeing him so itchy as well! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you considered colloidal silver? It can be quite amazing w/ skin conditions.... Colloidal Silver & Colloidal Silver Supplements

| We had a Sheltie that we fought this with for some time. Tried all kinds of vet recommended medicated shampoos, etc. I don't remember where we got the advice, but someone told us to use Pert Shampoo. It worked miracles! She stopped itching, the scales went away and her fur grew back in. You would never know she ever had a skin problem. And it worked quickly, if my memory serves me right. (This was probably 6 or 7 years ago.) So once a week we would shampoo her with Pert and she never had a problem with it again. It's worth a try.... Good luck!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Are you already giving Omegas? For skin issues, I don't like flax oil bc of some dogs' inability to convert it. I like a fish oil - and then also you really want a fatty acid called GLA on board too. The one I like is Ark Naturals Royal Coat - you can get it online or at Whole Foods and other health stores.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh good! Well, if you want just the GLA - then you'd look for a borage oil.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | LOL, I'm not ! I think it's partly just my nursing background, but I just love all things about dog nutrition and health. Plus, my own boys have had a few issues - so on a few things, I've been there, done it, invented the t-shirt.

| My yorkie has allergies so I feed him boiled chicken, white rice, green peas, and pumpkin. He had staph on his belly and bumps on his back. For the belly I use antibiotic or hydrocortisone cream (if itching). The best thing I have found is shampoo at EntirelyPets.com its called Malaseb Antibacterial shampoo its also antifungal. Be sure and follow the instructions on bottle. Hope this helps!!!!! |

| Well, last night I got Ivan in the bathtub and hosed down his back. I washed him with Pert scrubbing with rubber grooming brush to loosen up all the dead skin. I must have pulled a large scab off because I found a quarter-size raw spot on him. A lot of fur attached to dead skin came off in the rinse. So after I dried him off I checked him over. My gosh this is the worst I've ever seen him and believe me I check my dogs over regularly. This is getting worse fast! We are going to doggy doctor as soon as I can get an appointment. I put some cortisone on all the spots I found. He seems to feel better and not as itchy. For the first time I found areas on his shoulders. He has never had trouble there before. I have my shopping list going for all of your suggestions too. Thanks for all the input you guys. I really appreciate it. |

| Update I have been bathing Ivan with medicated shampoo and Pert every other day following up with cortisone on the raw spots. Just when I think he is getting better I find new patches farther down on his body. They haven't reached his belly yet and I think I may have stopped the progression. The good news is that shampooing him so frequently has relieved the itching considerably. We also started giving him a suppplement designed for healthy skin and coat. With any luck at all we are over the hump till the weather warms up. Keep your fingers crossed! |

| Thanks for the update. I was just thinking about him today and decided to check in. I hope he beats this thing.
