I'm so sorry about Olive! Please accept my sincerest sympathy for your loss.

Your thread has helped me immensely. I have had Lulu for a month, and I'm so deeply in love with her already, and I am worried sick about having her spayed. Because of this site, I made sure I found a highly recommended vet and made an appt. They asked if I wanted to go ahead and schedule the spay, and I said no. I just wanted to confer and get her a check up. The vet was awesome. Lulu is 6 months and 1 week old, weighs 2.7 lbs., and he said she wasn't ready to be spayed. She still has a little soft spot on her head, which he said, felt like it was trying to close, and also, she still has baby teeth. He said he wants her to lose the baby teeth and many were loose, but said nothing about pulling them. He said he wants her to lose the baby teeth before he spays her, and to bring her back in 2 months. He didn't say anything about the first heat and did not give me a sense of urgency at all. I told him I was worried about having her spayed because of her size, and he said he highly recommends having it done, but he never specified "when". So, now I'm wondering if there is a correlation between the baby teeth and time of spay? This thread is the first I have heard of pulling them. Do Yorkies not lose them easily? Is pulling them common?

I can't even imagine how you (and your vet staff) must feel. I had my less than 3 pounder at 9 months spayed two weeks ago, and all went well,. I spent that day in a time warp though. They assured me that they spay chichuas that are smaller than her though.

What a void you must feel...I can only imagine. I'm so sorry this happened. There are no explanations that will do.

Getting your baby spayed before first heat was a responsible step as a pet owner who has no intention of breeding. BEfore I knew better, I did not spay a girl I had because I was so sure on dog could ever "get" to her, so why bother...I came home one day and found her in a pool of blood because her uterus had ruptured, so the reverse is not pretty either.

You did the RIGHT thing. You had NO way of knowing that this would happen, and no one is to blame, not even your vet. Please know that this happened for some reason, and it does happen, but it is one of those things in life we always thing will happen to "someone else", but someone is that "someone", and this time it was you, our fellow board member, so it hits close to home.

We all reach out our arms across cyber space to hug you. Being yorkie owners we all put ourselves in your shoes, and catch our breaths, because "there but for the grace of God go I."

Please heal, and do what you need to do to have another baby in your life.

They suggest if the teeth do not fall out to get them done at the same time. This way it is only once they have to go under. I think I read that it is common for alot of toy breeds to retain there puppy teeth...not just yorkies.

I just wanted to tell you that although it may not be much comfort to you at this time, you did save my little girls life. I was scheduled to have her spayed several times and each time my husband made me cancel it. He kept telling me she was too small and I kept telling him the vet felt comfortable doing it, we should too. Well, when Lola was very young she had gotten sick and has never eaten much...the question of a liver shunt had come up repeatedly with her, but my vet kept saying over and over, "she has no symptoms of a liver shunt, she is just a picky eater and very small...we don't need to bile acid test her" - well after reading your story, I insisted on a bile acid test on 2/23/09. It came back incredibly high. I flew her to see Dr Tobias at the University of Tennessee on 3/5/09 for scintigraphy, which showed a large shunt; she underwent surgery on 3/6/09 and is home and doing fine now. Had I let them put her under anesthetic for a spay when she was scheduled, I don't think she would have made it due to how these liver shunt babies process anesthetic with their damaged livers. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting your story....as painful as it must have been and as heartbroken as you must be, please know the good that you have done. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief, but you will have my eternal gratitude for sharing and giving my Lola the chance that you have given her! Please know that sweet little Olive will be remembered each and every day in our home. God bless you.

My little Matty is only 3 pounds. She has already had her first heat, but I have decided not to have her spayed unless or until I feel she is physically ready. I don't know when or if that day will ever come - I definately will not breed her - but in the meantime I am happy with the decision I have made to wait. She is never alone and we have no male dog, so there is no chance of her getting pregnant. I'm just too afraid that I could lose her.

You are so thoughtful to post this experience here for others, even though I know you may think you just wanted comfort. I have been trying to read all about spaying before taking our little one in, and this story just breaks my heart.

I am very, very sorry for your loss.

I am also very, very thankful that you and everyone else posted on this thread to help you and others.

Im am so sorry, my heart just breaks, if this happened to my Paris i would be devistated. My Paris is 1 yr and NOT spayed yet. I have had many dogs throughout my life spayed and not spayed and have found no difference in the life span. I will spay my Paris when the time is right for me and her. Once again my sympathy to you and your family and Olive.

oh how my heart aches for you right now! I know exactly what you are feeling, as I lost my beloved little Coco last June while under anesthesia. I still have not gotten over it and think perhaps I never will.

I chose not to spay her younger sister (who was scheduled to go in a week after I lost Coco) and also not to spay our newer puppy. Mine are 2 1/2 & almost 4 lbs.

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby Olive. It must have been a fluke accident (I know that doesn't help you any) but Teddi is only 3 lbs. currently and 2 1/2 years old. She had a liver shunt (but I didn't find out until she was 1 year) and before she was 1 year she had surgery twice. Once she got spayed and once she had some teeth taken out. She was probably no more than 2.5 lbs. when she had both of those surgeries. I know someone who had liver shunt surgery on her yorkie at 9 WEEKS, which was why I wasn't scared for Teddi to have any surgery because I figured at 9 weeks her dog had to be smaller than Teddi.
