My little Olive - succumbed to Anesthesia nightmare

They immediately tried to get her heart started again. Her heart started beating for a few minutes, then it started to slow down, until it stopped again. Little Olive could not keep her heart beating.

My worst nightmare came true. You hear about this happening, but never think it will happen to you. WE are brainwashed to "spay the puppy before she comes into her first heat, otherwise she will get breast/ovarian cancer", and are thus pressured to spay early or at least 6 months old, for fear of the first heat. But now I question, what is more un-natural for a puppy, coming into a heat (as God intended for reproduction) or putting a young, small Yorkie puppy under anesthesia?

I wish I had waited until Olive was older, maybe 3.5 lbs or heavier before putting her under anesthesia. But because of the "fear of the first heat", lost my common sense. Growing up, I've had many female dogs that were not spayed until later in life. ALL grew to live long healthy lives.

For those who own very tiny Yorkies out there, do you remember how old or weight they were when they were spayed? I am now completely tramatized, and vow never to spay a female Yorkie until they are over ONE year old (heat or no heat).

As a new comer to YorkieTalk, I am thankful to have found such a wonderful, caring community of Yorkie lovers.

I am so sorry to hear about your little Olive. Maybe there was another reason that happened to her. My vet seems to think the smaller they are, the better they do. There have been some much bigger than Olive that have died having surgery, just like people, some people die when they have aneshtesia.
I know I'm going to have to have my little girl done soon also, she's not quite 2 1/2 lbs and is a little over 7 mos, but, she will never get to 3 1/2 lbs. just like Little Olive probably never would have. I'm sure your heart is breaking, and I am so so sorry for your loss

Did you have pre op bloodwork done? A bile acids test? Could she have had an underlying health issue that caused the problem with the anesthesia?

Actually, they can be under 3 lbs. they just don't give as much anesthesia

Oh what a tragedy for you and the others that have lost their babies in surgery!!!!! My heart has just broke reading through this thread....

I too am facing a similiar situation with my Tulip...she's 5 months old and my vet is encouraging me to schedule her appointment...she's not even 2 1/2 lbs yet!!!! I don't know if she has any baby teeth left...but I'm terrified!

She's so small and fragile. I plan on having all the pre-op testing done...etc....but knowing you did it and still lost your baby...that has unnerved me!!!

Please know my heart goes out to you and your family!!! And you've given me alot to think about in the days ahead!!!!

Please do not beat yourself up with the "what ifs"...that will only tear you up more...You are a wonderful mommy that was only acting in your babies best interests... Sometimes tragedies like this happen...and there is no explanation...no rhyme or reason to it...it's just a sad tragic part of life here on earth. I'm sure Olive was adored and had a very happy life with you...and when your heart heals up a bit...you will be able to look back at the wonderful memories you have of her..and know that you are truly blessed to have had such a precious creature in your life....if even for a fleeting moment!

I am so sorry for your loss. Don't beat yourself up with the what-ifs, you know if your vet had thought there was any risk at all-they wouldn't have recommended you do the procedure. Sometimes things just happen.
