YorkieTalk Newbie! | Wobbling Hi, everyone. I am so glad to find this forum. My 3 yr. old Yorkie has had 2 episodes this last month. One time he was under the covers, rushed out, started throwing up, and couldn't stand w/o wobbling. The second time he was was standing in the livingroom, started wobbling, couldn't walk, no other symptons. Both times he was fine within 5 minutes. Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks! : ) Last edited by OzzyBear; 01-10-2009 at 08:00 PM. |

| It sounds kind of like seizure activity or something. Has he seen the vet? Does he have any medical issues or unexplanable behaviors?

| How much does he weigh? Does he do any other odd behaviors? Anything strange after eating? What does he eat? Is he a picky eater? |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thanks for your response. He weighs 8 pounds. No, he is not a picky eater. No, other than these 2 odd episodes, he is just fine. We have 2 other dogs and he keeps us with them very well, so I don't know what is going on. When he was 7 months old, he was dragging his back legs one time and we rushed him to the emergency room and the vet watched him walk, and then within 2-3 minutes, he was fine and running around?? That was 2 years ago and he has been fine. Now, this past month, these 2 episodes.???? |

| You might want to run some bloodwork for your dog because a lot of dogs with Liver shunt or MVD have neurological type episodes like wobbling when the ammonia in their systems is too high. A diet change could be warranted. Good Luck! |

| hmmm....something is not right. It does sound like seizure behavior. Not to scare you, but liver shunt is common with Yorkies, and these behaviors could somehow be liver related, or not....it could be something else, not sure what though... Have you ever had his Bile Acids Tested (BAT) before? This is a simple blood draw test, depending on your area costs about $40 to $80 - But it is a good base indicator of liver function. Maybe you should arrange to have a BAT with your Vet |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thank you so much Thank you for your information on him needing to have blood work done. I am so scared now, but little guy. I will get him to the vet asap. Thank you so much to all that replied. |

| He should have a BAT but try not to worry too much. It could be so many things...maybe even his thyroid?

I would have a Full Complete Blood Panel done and a Bile Acid Test (BAT) done. Both can be done during the same Vet visit. Make sure they give you instruction (12 hour fast) | |

| Don't be scared .... It is better to let the vet do bloodwork to find out exactly what is going on. 8lbs is good size for A yorkie too. AND it's my understanding that liver shunts are more common in the tiny Yorkie. My first thought was something like LP . Which is anther common health issue in A Yorkie. Since he had alreay a concern with his legs before... Maybe it is his knees ? Just a guess.

| FYI - I would fast the dog before doing to the vet and bring his food with you. BAT requires a blood draw after the dog has been fasted and then the dog eats and the blood work is repeated after 2 hours. Usually, before BAT testing, other liver enzymes may be elevated like ALT reading. This is one of the ones that usually warrants the BAT being done. In the meanwhile until you get to the vet, give your dog some plain yogurt (a couple of teaspoons) of either stonyfield farm or plain greek yogurt. Yogurt can help to absorb the toxins if you are in a liver situation. If it isnt liver prob, yogurt wont hurt anyway. |

| Size of yorkie not always indicative of liver shunt. I've got an lb. baby with MVD, diagnosed at age 6. LP not likely to cause vomiting or odd behavior (rushing out of covers) -- that sounds like seizure type activity. |

| Could be, or could not, that is why it is a guessing game right now. The OP is taking her Yorkie in for bloodwork and more tests. THis is the most important thing !
