| My Baby has Legg-Perthes Disease I just found out today that my 7 month old baby girl has Legg-Perthes Disease. I noticed about 2 weeks ago that Piper was walking around with only 3 legs and other times she seemed to walk perfectly normal. She didn't seem to be in pain and she was her happy little self. I didn't know if her foot, knee or hip was bothering her so I figured I better bring her to the vets to see what was going on. The vet knew just by handling and feeling the leg that it was the hip and suggested that we x-ray to see exactly what was going on. In the x-ray you could actually see that the ball of the femur was pitted and deteriorating and kind of floating around in the socket. The vet said that I should inform my breeder because this was an hereditary defect and other puppies could be affected. He also told me that it could happen to the other hip some time down the road. I have to admit that I'm really disappointed with the breeder because I made sure that I didn't buy from a broker or a pet store hoping to avoid something like this.

| This breaks my heart. You know, we get all sorts of crap for trying to educate people against purchasing from bad breeders and pet stores, as well as others just randomly breeding their dogs because they think they are "cute." People think we're being "mean" or "rude" but it posts like this that make me want to keep on keepin' on.. I am so sorry you and your girl are having to go through this. I actually have two friends (Delisa2850 and Mxkids) who have gone through this surgery with their babies just this year. Roxy and Tucker are both doing GREAT now and you're baby will too. Thank God you caught it quickly- the prognosis is really, really good when you catch it quickly and there is little little muscle atrophy. Please contact Delisa or Robin for support with this treatment- I know there is many more on here that have gone through the treatment and the babies are doing great. Good luck!!! PS- I know you didn't buy from a pet store or broker, but I'm just saying many do and end up with these problems.

| Today Piper had her surgery. The vet said that everything went extremely well and I will be able to bring her home tomorrow. I won't stop worrying until she is home where she belongs.

| Brought Piper home from the vet yesterday (through a very bad snow storm). She looks a little funny with the whole back right hind quarter completely shaved. She has a pretty good size incision with 8 pretty pink stitches. She walking on 3 legs and the vet said she should start to use the leg in about 10 days. I leave a little shirt on her because I don't want her touching the stitches or get cold. I felt so bad for her yesterday when she first got home. She is trained to potty outside and the first thing she wanted to do is go outside. I bundle her up in shirt and coat. It's snowing the wind is blowing and it's about 10 degrees. Here she was trying to pee and poop on 3 legs, on snow and ice, with the wind almost blowing her over. She accomplished everything very quickly and was back inside. What a little trooper. She is on pain meds and antibiotic and seems to be comfortable.
