Brandy's Mom- I am so sorry to hear about your baby. Sushi has gone through four rounds (one per month since diagnosis) of a chemo-type drug and has been on Prednisone also. She was showing great improvment and it is not until this week that she has started "slipping and sliding" a bit. Our vet has reduced her to only two half pills of Prednsione weekly and I am worried that may not be enough. We are trying to reduce her meds since the side effects have been somewhat problematic. All things considered, I am fine with her chasing the cat and being aggressive and having some accidents in the house, but the ideal would be to have her off the meds. My vet has only told me that this is a progressive illness. He really doesn't know much about it. I asked lots of questions at our last appoinment, but he really could not tell me what might come next or how she will do. I believe in my daughter's thoughts that miracles happen. I wish you the best and our hearts and prayers go out to you. If you would like me to get the name of the chemo treatment that has been used, please let me know. I have a neighbor whose dog was diagnosed 2 years ago and a friend's vet said he had heard of only one case, but that dog lived for seven years... My vet did not think that Sushi would still be with us at this point. Try to stay positive! I know how hard it is to get this type of news!!! I have not been online for awhile due to the illness and passing of my father-in-law and just checked the forum today for the first time in at least two months... I think I was meant to respond to you post! Hugs, Sushi's Mom

All of you will stay in our prayers.. I agree with Pat but it still hurts when it happens. If the breeder is a responsible one the problem will not be produced again cause they will not breed the same 2 dogs again. BUT, some things just lie dormant until a stressor or trigger comes along and wakes the sleeping giant. That is when your world just seems to be spinning out of your control. That is also when the best medicine we have is prayer, faith and positive thinking. I hope that your baby is not in pain even though this is a setback. Prayers and God's blessings are asked for you..

Necrotizing Encephelitis We are brand new to this site. Our little 2-1/2 year old Jewel has been prognosed with Necrotizing Encephalitis or GME like Sushi. With out a biopsy of the brain, there is no way to determine what exactly she has. We had an MRI & Spinal Tap done in June and at the time her neurologist told us to expect her to pass away in a few weeks. Well she showed them! It's now 2006 and she is still with us. But it has definitely been a rollercoaster ride with really good days followed by really bad ones. We have been searching endlessly for answers and help and we are still learning about this terrible disease. We recently met with an Alternative Medicine Veterinarian and are working on getting her off the prednisone. As we saw in previous posts, we can clearly see many of you are very compassionate and some have gone more than an extra mile to help each other learn more about it. NE & GME are very rare. Not much is known about the cause and there is no cure. All we can ask for is support and finding ways to keep these Beautiful Little Angels as comfortable as we possibly can. Thanks for caring, Dan & Cori

Gme Dan and Cori- Wow! It is so good to hear good news! My Sushi is done with her chemo treatments and I spoke to our vet yesterday. He suggested that we continue with the Predinsone twice a day and call if we have problems. He doesn't believe that she could take any more chemo, but will do it if she plummets... He hopes we will not need to talk again until June when he would try to get her off of the Prednisone. Hearing hopeful stories like yours helps me to believe that all will be fine! best, Sushi's mom

Happy For You I am so happy for you! The neurologist that we took Brandy to checked with the oncologist in his practice and they didn't think that Brandy would respond to the chemo because she hadn't responded to the prednisone or sandimmune. We had to make the decision to let her cross the rainbow bridge. I still can't write about it without crying but we have a new addition to our family, which helps. She's R Irrisistable Chloe, our new yorkie baby. She helps ease the pain but I still miss my girl. Again, I'm so very happy for your progress. Donna

| How's Sushi? How's Sushi doing? Just wanted to check in and see if there's been any positive changes. Jewel is going in for a follow-up on Monday to see if we can cut back on her preds. even more. It's been 8 months now for her and her doctors (Yes, we have 4 doctors for her) can not believe she is still with us. Since weaning her off the preds, she has become stronger and is able to stand on slick floors with out sliding out like "Bambi on Ice". But in the last few weeks she started to circle to the left cronically. We decided against using any chemo type meds and to take a alternative medicine route with her newest doctor. I'll post an update after her appointment on Monday.

Gme This my first time to this site so please excuse me if I wrote this twice. My Yorkie was diagnosed with GME 10 1/2 years ago when he was 1 year and 9 months. He was treated with steroids (immunosuppressive doses) and recovered. He never had a recurrence until this Oct. at the age of 12 and 1/2. My vet and the neurologist did not believe it, but when the MRI was negative, and the spinal tap showed monocytosis, they could not beleive it. The bottom line is they do not what causes GME or how to treat it definetively. I hope they agree to write my dogs storey up just so everyone can learn more. I offered my dog for autopsy for research, but they are only doing research on GME in pugs. My heart goes out to you. I was very lucky, but after losing my dog this Oct. 5th, I don't feel lucky, even though I should.

My heart goes out to you. My Yorkie had GME at age 1yr and 10 months. He somehow survived with immunosuppressive doses of steroids(we saw a neurologist after the diagnosis was made.) Remarkably, he never had a relapse until this Oct. 10 1/2 years later. The symptoms were the exact same, so I had the vet put him on steroids until I could get to a neurologist 3 days later. They did an MRI (negative) and a spinal tap which showed a monocytosis and lymphocytosis. He was 12 1/2 years old now, so even the neurologist didn't believe it was GME. Long story short, the neurologist stopped the steroids, and told us we could pick him up. He was so ataxic he could not even stand and then had a seizure. We had to put him down. I am still not over it, but I feel like I got 10 1/2 years that I never should have. He was so athletic and happy he couldn't live like that. My advice, see a neurologist ASAP. Some dogs do survive. I will keep you in my prayers.

Sushi is going to make it. I just know it. I will keep your Yorkie and your family in my prayers. My Yorkie survived for 10 1/2 years after the diagnosis before a recurrence, and I can't be the only one. We all need to learn more about this disease, the causes, relapses and treatments. The worst part is that since they know so little the neurologist is not convinced it was GME the second time because that is unheard of. Well $4000.00 later, I am convinced and am going to make sure they learn more. Please keep us updated on Sushi's progress. Serena
