Donating YT 10K Club Member | Since he was given antibotics...I would guess the diagnosis was kennel cough. Sometimes it takes quite a while for this to go away. No he won't die from reverse sneezing. When he does it...place your fingers across his nostrils...this will force him to breathe out of his mouth and the "honking" will stop. And I don't understand what you mean about his heart? There aren't any bones in their hearts. Do you mean valves? There are 4 valves in a dog's heart.

| Reverse sneezing is very common with kennel cough. I was just at the vet for some vaccinations and spoke to my vet about kennel cough. We're having an epidemic in my neighbourhood. Kennel cough is very contagious. I live in a neighbourhood with a lot of dogs, many of them socialize on the beach at the dog park. So when kennel cough starts going around, many dogs in my neighbourhood get it. My Yorkie has had it twice in the past year. It can last up to 3 weeks or so. As long as your dog is eating and remains playful, the kennel cough is a mild irritation. You can relieve some of the discomfort with steam, like running a hot shower and keeping the dog in the bathroom. Robotussin DM is also effective (1 teaspoon per 20 pounds). I know Yorkies are usually under 10 pounds, so 1/2 teaspoon every 12 hours can help. You only need to worry if your dog starts acting ill, beyond the coughing. Vets are usually all too happy to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics or worse - after all, business is business. Your vet really should have mentioned kennel cough during your visit and at least let you know what your dog was being treated for. Forums like this are also a great place to get information! Good luck |

| About the heart, vets have a chart that they look at and determine what size a dog's heart should be. The problem with Yorkies is that their hearts tend to be larger than what the vet would think is a good size. You can go to a cardiologist to get him checked out (and I probably would) but I wouldn't be surprised if he is just fine.

| you never know what you're going to get when you buy from a pet store. I wish you would have come on here first, the one thing you never want to do is buy from a petstore. Those pups come from puppy mills, and there have been so many sad stories of dogs being bought from them. You always have to remember, a good breeder would NEVER have to sell to a petstore. I hope and pray your baby is going to be okay. |

| well i did go yesterday for the second opinion...I told the vet the situation....So he told me that the med the other vet had given me was only antibiotics(i took the med. from the first vet, so he could see what it was)...He asked if she had given me anything for the cough because that was only antibiotics, but nothing for the actual cough....So he gave me some yellow or orange looking medicine for cough....He said after cough is gone he will give me some med. for the reverse sneezing and that he also wants to take a second look at the x-ray...he said to pick them up from the first vet...he said there is no point in paying for x-ray again...I hope this vet can help me out...I found him in yahoo yellow pages and from all the vets near me he got 100% good reviews.....I really hope it goes away and that I dont have to take him to a specialist... |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Just a warning on the heart x ray....regular vets are not schooled enough in this area to know the specifics of every breed. They literally go by an image chart for comparison. It's likely this second vet will tell you the same as the first. Some advice I'd offer you...when you are at the vet's if you do not understand what they are telling you....make them explain it until you do. Remember you are paying them.... Hopefully it is kennel cough and with proper treatment it will go away. Sometimes that takes awhile though. Good luck.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Some dogs still have kennel cough symptoms as long as a month. The coughing should lessen but it can still be present for a long time. Another name for kennel cough is bortelleo. I took one of my to see a cardiologist and that's when I learned that regular vets compare the heart sizes to an image chart. If he is acting puppyish other than the cough...there probably isn't a heart issue.

| I guess I would go to a cardiologist if the new vet agrees with the old vet just to be safe. The old vet may also see something that the new one doesn't while reading the xray, so if it were my Yorkie, even if only one vet said there was a problem, I'd be concerned until she saw a cardiologist. But I'm guessing your pup is okay.
