| diarrhea and won't eat Hey guys, we just recently got our new puppy 2 days ago and his name is dolce. The first day he didn't eat anything but the second day he started to eat the orijen puppy food we left out. his first two poops were solid but then he started to get diarrhea. Then came blood in his diarrhea around the third time. We took him to the vet and the vet did a parvo test and a blood glucose and both came out fine. Then he gave us diarrhea medicine. The blood continued so we called the breeder at around 6am, he said not to give him the medicine and don't feed him the food the doctor gave us (hill's prescription diet). Today the blood is less but he still has diarrhea, he's drinking water but won't eat. What should I do? Last edited by dolce0621; 10-28-2008 at 05:00 PM. |

| Forgot to mention he's had his second shots, and the orijen we feed him we add some warm filtered water to it. When he drinks the water he goes to his food bowl, sniffs the food but then won't eat it. |

| I don't have any suggestions but i hope things work out with you and your new pup. Keep us updated as find out. Maybe the not eating is just stress related to a new home, but the blood not sure

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | First, is the Orijen what he was eating when he came to you -- or is that a brand new food for him? Bc if it's a sudden food switch, that could cause a lot of digestive stress - esp. w/ a new environment. How old is this pup? Did the vet do a fecal test? If not, they need to asap. What med was given? I would continue to give it. I would probably not feed the Hills, personally. If the diarrhea continues, he'll need to go back to the vet since he is a puppy. In the meantime, it's really important that he eats. You could try some mashed potatoes (w/ a bit of butter/salt for flavor) - canned or fresh (I always keep canned/sliced on hand for my dogs, in case of sickness). Try giving a bit of a plain cracker, bread - to help settle the tummy - let him have a good portion of it if he's interested. You should have Nutrical on hand to give this pup - or give Karo syrup or honey if he gets lethargic (sign of low blood sugar). With yorkie puppies, you need to know that w/ diarrhea - they can go down FAST and be in a sudden, emergent situation very quickly. So, you really do need to keep a VERY close eye on him - get food in him, keep him hydrated, give him the meds, take him back to the vet if he's not feeling better very soon.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I would highly advise taking puppy and a fecal sample back to the vet to test for coccidea. It's a parasite...all puppies have this, but not all get sick. Sometimes the stress of moving to a new home causes the symptoms. If treated early...it's easily controlled. Puppy would take an antibotic for 2 weeks. I hope Dolce gets better soon...that's a really cute name.

| I would definitely see if the vet can do a fecal on your puppy. After bringing my puppy home, he experienced the same type of symptoms that you are describing. (diarrhea, not eating or eating very little, etc) I took him to the vet, they did a fecal and drew some blood and sure enough, he had coccidea. They put him on antibiotics and a bland diet. Hope this helps some. Good luck with your puppy.

| I had a similar problem with Pepe bloddy diahrea, no interest in food or water...My vet did a fecal test and it turned out to be a parasite giardia (sp?) He was on medication for about 10 days and then probiotics and he come out if just fine. Hope your dolce feels better soon. PS: While he had the diahrea I gave him a dropper full of childrens pedialyte every 1-2 hours so he didnt get dehydrated since he's not drinking water....just a suggestion |

| I just have one question, and am going to ask it gently. I am just curious as to why you think the breeder knows more than the veterinarian? Your baby needs to stay on the medication that was given by the vet. Like Ann said, you don't have to feed the Hill's, but he does need bland food such as boiled chicken and rice. It is actually better that he doesn't eat anything for the day, as it will allow the intestines to heal. HOWEVER, he needs Nutrical every couple hours to prevent a blood sugar drop. What meds did the vet give you? How big/old is your baby?

| Dolce started eating yesterday (quite a bit) and the blood became less and less, only like one drop. We didn't take him to a regular vet, we took him to an emergency hospital. The vet there did take blood and did a fecal but he only checked for parvo in the fecal and checked for his blood glucose level. He's 4 months and 1.5kg. The medication we were given was metronidazole and the orijen puppy food was apparently the same one the breeder was feeding him. |

| The reason I would believe in the breeder more then the vet that we took him to is that if cocci and giardia are such common infections and you guys can and the breeder can recognize symptoms for it, then why would the ER vet not check for it, or even think that it could be a possibility and check for parvo instead? Even after he's seen that Dolce is immunized against parvo, with all his shots up to date. Maybe the vet we took him to just wasn't a good one, because of that can someone tell me how to collect a fecal sample to bring to a different vet because i doubt that Dolce will go on command and I would like to request that those bacterial infections be checked for. |

If the diarrhea has stopped already, then I probably wouldn't worry much about it. However, if there is still diarrhea - then just watch for your pup to go, grab a baggie, collect it in the baggie, put that baggie inside another baggie. On the baggie, write the time of the poo - and get the sample to the vet as soon as you can. Giardia is notorious for hiding under scope, so often they have to do more than 1 test to see it. Metro would treat giardia anyway. The real benefit of *knowing* if he has giardia is for reinfection purposes -- bc IF he has giardia, you have to clean everywhere he's been while being treated. Bc during treatment they shed giardia cysts - which can reinfect them as soon as they're well. Hope to hear he is feeling even better!
