Blood in the stool Hi all! I am new to this forum as I just got my first Yorkie yesterday. Whoo hooo! I have wanted one for years! My name is Gina and I live in New Jersey. His name is Frankie and he is 4 months old. I got him from a breeder in Missouri and he traveled on a plane to get to me yesterday. He is the sweetest thing - I just am so in love already! Ok, so although breeder had taken him to vet on Wednesday, I still wanted to take him to my vet. He went today and unfortunately the typical vet who usually is there was on vacation and I did not like the stand-in vet at all. Anyhow, he threw up on the table twice - so we are chalking that up to stress. However, he pooped on the table (happy that he pooped as he hadn't done that for me yet) but unfortunatly there was blood present. His stool wasn't loose - it was somewhat formed - and the vet stated he could have colitis and could also be a number of things. He started talking to me about starting him on antibiotics and running all these tests. When he left the room, the nurse stated that he could have possibly just been holding so much in that it did something to his insides and possibly that's why there was blood. He suggested waiting a few days, feed him boiled ground beef and boiled rice, and see what happens. She said it could be just the stress. Hmmm? I'm a little nervous. Any advice? I guess this isn't just a Yorkie question but a puppy question in general. I do have a Yorkie question but I won't post here since it's not an emergency. Thanks everyone! I look forward to getting to know all of you and your Yorkies! Gina

Donating YT 30K Club Member | The vet should have run a fecal test on the stool to check for parasites. Many times puppies will have coccydia, one of mind did and medicine cleared it up. It could be from stress as well but I would try and take another sample in Monday to your vet and ask to check it if he still has blood in his poop. Hope it was just stress related. Congratulations on your new puppy!!!

well first CONGRATS AND WELCOME!! second.... you need to find a vet you are comfortable with. and third... i would ask that they run tests on his poop. I woudl NOT start him on antibiotics.. he just got home from what could only have been a very stressful flight. You need to get him eating and peeing and pooping normal. My guess would be it is stress induced. Just make sure he is eating... he might not want to eat his kibble right now because he is adjusting. He is on a quality kibbble (no Eukanuba, Iams or any of that other junk). If you can't get him to eat his food try something like boiled chicken, scrambled egg, cottage cheese, apple, cheerios. Just something so you know his system is working and see how his next poop is. also make sure he is drinking properly.. if that means using an eye dropper to put it in.. make sure he gets it in these next few days. Good luck I'm sure he is ok but just keep and eye on him for the next couple days... if he develops diarrhea bring him to the vet.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Blood in a young puppy can be scary and urgent - so I would have that fecal tested asap, fecal tests are generally cheap - and if he has anything, you'd want to know immediately. Then, the vet would know what to prescribe. Marci gave you really good advice for food. Watch him CLOSELY.

Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions. Yes, I think I need to find another vet and next poop I will take to have tested. Praying that it is just from the stress though. So you guys don't recommend the beef and rice thing?

um... i'd do boiled chicken and white rice... there is less fat... while you can get extra lean beef i'd try white chicken breast first. I'm pretty sure he will gobble it right up

My adopted Yorkies had bloody diarrhea and threw up and it turned out that they had hook worms. I'm surpised the vet didn't do a fecal test... Our vet did that right away and always does when we come in for a check up...

No reason to wait for next poop to take him to the vets....the vet can extract what he needs to peform a fecal exam.... Check the color of his gums......make sure they're pink...if not, could be parasites.....

This have happened to my Yorki a lot of times. In the beginning I went crazy with worry and was running to the vet every time it happened but all the vets I took her too said to relax. A small puppy have such a small stomach every thing its eats have an immediate effect and can irritate the digestive system and it eats everything! It find things on the floor in your house that you dropped cooking or eating months ago or that are not for eating in the first place Every time a small puppy eats is actually quite a big quantity for a very small fragile stomach and that might result in small amount of blood in the stool. So unless the puppy throws up as well and is drowsy and refuse eating- don't worry!!! If it doesn't pass in a week go to see a vet otherwise expect this to happen every now and then.

if it makes you feel any better.. i only used Layla's crate at night.. during the day i just watched her.. we went out every hour... after she played or ate or napped. I just didn' tlike the idea of having a new puppy and having her in the crate the whole time. You might want to try it that way too!

I havent used the crate at all. Couldn't handle locking her in... it's almost barbaric so I just watched her and took her out every other hour. Accidents still happen occasionally but otherwise we are managing it Don't agree with the crate being the only solution. They are very intelligent small animals that just want you to be happy. So if your puppy see that you get angry when she poos inside and happy when she does it outside she will try her hardest It's amazing how much they understand ... but don't forget - they have a very very very small bladder so dont be too hard
