| I am reading about your little Toby in tears. I will pray for him and send him good vibes. I agree with Wylie's Mom - just visit him every chance you get, talk to im in a gentle voice only words of love and encouragement and let him smell your hand while you pet him so he knows you're there with him. Gosh, I pray he will get better and forget what happened to him.

| So far so good Toby had 4 full syringes for breakfast and he stood and walked just a little, he seems tired today, probably sore too. He is opening his eyes a little wider I think. I'm having trouble getting him to take water, he has trouble swallowing it...does anybody have any suggestions? We haven't had a poopie today...is there something I can do to help him in that area, maybe some way of stimulateing him to poop? One good thing, this morning while working on standing and walking Toby went pee and he squatted to pee, well as best he could squat but the intention was there...Toby hadn't progressed to the lifting a leg to pee when the accident happened, he's just a baby. It seems a good sign that he is reverting back to normal behavior to go pee. Doesn't that mean his brain is beginning to function better? Thanks again everyone and please keep the prayers coming. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Good to hear about Toby this morning ! If he's having trouble taking water - and he hasn't pooped, he may be getting a little constipated (also, since he's not moving much, this adds to it). Do you mean he's having more difficulty in swallowing than before - or that he's just not feeling like drinking? If he's constipated, his tummy may be bothering him. I'd probably sweeten some water w/ Karo syrup or honey to see if he'll drink more - bc you really want to hydrate him to keep those bowels hydrated. If you have canned pumpkin, you can give a tsp. of that for constipation as well. Another thing you could do (with your VET'S approval) is some "limb movement" stuff - like, move his little limbs around like a physical therapist would - this might help get things moving a bit as well, even though it's not as good as walking, per se. GREAT news on the sqatting!!!!

| How is Toby doing with the water intake? I think if you're still seeing the problem, I would call the vet - I know it's a holiday, but I'm sure since your vet let you take Toby home, that it shouldn't be a problem to call the vet. I'm almost surprised the vet hasn't called you.

| Toby's water intake I have called the vet and she said its not that he doesn't want to swallow water but that his swallow reflex is impaired and it will take time for him to learn to swallow again. I am giving him water with a syringe its just hard getting him to swallow it instead of letting it dribble out his mouth or getting choked on it. The vet said to mix some water in with the formula we are feeding him with the syringe and to just keep working on getting him to swallow the water and he will. I am working his little legs and helping him try to walk, the vet said that would keep the gut working better. She said basically he's not taking in a lot of solids so there isn't a lot of poop...the food I give him is a mixture of prescription dog food, very fine and mushy, and some liquid stuff that the vet said was about the same as Insure for older people. She said it would supply the vitamins and calories he needs. Toby isn't losing any weight so it must be working. This is so hard, but everytime I get discouraged and down I think how much harder it is for him and I feel ashamed of myself. He's not gonna give up so I'm not gonna give up and today has been a good day, he's been very alert between naps and his walking has been good this afternoon. I have to go back to work tomorrow...I owe my soul to my vet...but my daughter is going to be able to stay with Toby, on Wednesday I'm off work again and on Thursday the daughter can stay with him again and Friday I'm taking him to work with me. I'm on the road most of the day so it shouldn't be a problem...I hope! |

| I'm so happy to read that Toby got to come home. Thank the Lord! I think everything Toby is going through now is normal for head trauma. My friend's dog was hit by a car and went through much of what you have described. After she recovered enough to begin walking again, she could only walk in circles, and held her head at a strange angle. It took quite a bit of time, but she fully recovered and lived out a long life. I'm sure Toby will too! I will keep you both in my prayers. |

| Sending good wishes and prayers that Toby will make a complete recovery. I am impressed at the care you are taking of him. Obviously Toby is surrounded by a lot of love and that in itself is a very powerful thing!
