| My baby fell of the bed and hurt his leg! Hi, I'm new to this site! I found it on my search for answers on how to keep my little pup calm/quiet to allow his hurt leg to heal. Teddy is 11 week old, 2 lb, yorkie mix puppy. Last night he was laying next to me on my bed eating a bone. I got up to grab my laptop off my dresser (literally 2 feet away) and the 5 secs that my back was turned, Teddy managed to fall off my bed!! As soon as he fell, he yelped and I picked him up. He seemed fine, and then I put him on the ground and that's when I noticed him starting to limp and favor his front right leg. I picked him up and moved his leg around to see if he would cry...nothing. He kept wanting to run around and play and jump around and this made me nervous (he's a VERY active and BRAVE doggie). So I kept him in his crate the rest of the night so he could rest. In the morning he seemed to not be limping at all so I was happy about that. Then when I came home for lunch to let him out, he seemed to be limping again like he was the night before. This worried me so I immediately called the vet and brought him in to be seen. The vet checked him out and did a full range of motion with his leg and shoulder. He didn't flinch once or even really care what the vet was doing to him. The vet said she believes it is just a soft tissue injury (sprain) and since he isn't yelping or crying and has no problem putting some weight on it and running, that she doesn't even feel he needs meds. She recommended I keep him as docile as possible (yeah right!!) How am I suppose to keep a hyperactive puppy like Teddy calm besides just keeping him in his crate? When I got home from work today, I tried to get him to just hang out and be calm with me, but all he wants to do is play and run around. This make me feel uncomfortable because I want him to get better. The vet did say that if in the next 48 hours he gets worse or doesn't show any improvement, I should bring him in for xrays. I just want him to rest as much as he can. Is it okay if I just keep him in the crate for the most part? Of course I'll let him out to feed him and take him out to go potty, but I just feel bad because he's so playful. Do any of you have any recommendations? I'm sorry this is so long. I'm just so upset that this happened and feel like such a bad mom. I was crying last night and today and my boyfriend thinks I'm crazy. But he's my baby and he's hurt and I feel helpless. Thanks in advance for your advice! |

| For now you'll feel bad leaving Teddy in his crate, but in the big scheme of things it's for his own good. I'm sorry this happened. They are fast little boogers, aren't they? Abby has scared me half to death more than once. Does he have a favorite stuffed animal or a blankey that he likes that you could put in his crate with him? I would put his water in there too. I wish you all the best. Please let us know how Teddy gets along. Tammy

| When our Gracie broke her leg at four months old we had to keep her confined too. We used a playpen to confine her when we were not able to closely supervise her. If you don't have one maybe you could borrow one from someone. Good luck, it's not easy to keep a puppy quiet.

| I think your baby will be fine. The same thing happened to my Diddy at the same age except he slipped on the hardwood stairs. He was really hurting and limping. The vet tok an xray found a fracture $300 for that visit he recommended a specialist ($400) who took another xray and recommended $3400 surgery which I could not afford. I elected to let his leg heal on his own as he was a growing pup with rest which as you know is very hard. I am happy to report that his leg has healed and he is back to normal although he sometimes favor the leg. |

| Teddy So sorry to hear about teddy, but it sounds like he is going to be just fine. I think keeping him confined in smaller area would be good for a few days to give his little leg time to heal. I know it makes you feel horrible when they are hurt, just the other day I had a real scare with my little Dixie who is almost 14 weeks old. I stayed up with her all nite practically just watching her sleep. In the morning she was absolutly fine. My daughters who are twins have a yorkie from a different litter than my Dixie, he is just 12 weeks old and is named Teddy also. They are both so cute together. I had Dixie ordered from a breeder who I got my bichon sisters from 7 yrs ago and went to NC to pick her up. After we got there my daughters asked him if he had any other yorkie puppies for sale that were not spoken for and he had this one and I am so glad they purchased him.. Being just two weeks younger and from a different liter than Dixie he is smaller and last friday nite when we took them to the vet I was amazed that she now wieghs 3pds. 12 oz. and he wieghed 3pds. 7 ozs. I see you are from Ashburn, that is not far away from me. We are just outside of Manassas. Do you know any local yorkie organizations around that maybe have a yorkie play group or something? These two are little but it would be nice to get them around other yorkies sometimes. Good Luck with your Teddy. I just purchased stairs to put next to my bed.. I ordered them from Pet Solutions.com for like 35 dollars. They hold like 120 pds and fold for storage. I am scared that when Teddy and Dixie are running all over the top of my king sized bed that they will also fall off. They know how to go up and down stairs now so I hope they will learn to go up and down these as well. Keep me informed as to how your little one does! |

| welcome to YT! I think you have received some great advice. I hope improvement comes quickly. Try not to be too hard on yourself - just know you have learned a valuable lesson - they are quick and a leg injury hopefully wouldn't be as bad as a head injury.

| I had the same problem with my little girl. Ice it for about 10 min a day for about a week and your puppy should be back to normal. Just watch it and like everyone else said... no more bed.

| Hello, i am new to this site and I am so glad that I found it! The same thing happen to my 5mo old baby Dallas. He jumped out of my arms because he got so excited when he saw me pick up the leash. When he fell to the floor he yelped & howled like I have never heard him do before. I took him to the our vet ($200) for xrays (2 fractures), medicine, office visit & (because the doctor wasn't sure about the xray, she had to sent it out to a specialist $77). I called the specialist and it's $140 just for the office visit so I can imagine what the surgery will cost! Although the vet did give me a copy of the xray's, I'm sure I will not be able to afford the surgery. But I can't stand to see him hopping around on 3 legs, although he still is very active. Do you think he will heal properly? Should his leg be wrapped in a splint or something? Please help, I am so worried. |

Keeping him docile doesn't mean crating him all the time. Yorkies should be taught never to jump from furniture on or off. We keep steps by all furniture that Joey uses, and he uses the steps to go off the furniture as well. Use a treat in your hand to coax him up and down the steps.

| Hi there and welcome to YT . I am sorry your baby was hurt . The smaller they are the easier they can have accidents. These tiny ones do not know danger, and are quite the daredevils. I am glad Teddy will be ok. You have done everything right. I do not feel like you have to crate him all day, however you are going to need to observe him closer . The problem is that if he jumps off anything high again while healing he could end up breaking his leg or fracturing it. If it is too hard to constantly supervise him then by all means place him in his crate. There are good expens or playpens you may want to invest in. He would be safer confined in a bigger area.
