YT Addict | Jenna's Tummy Troubles Continue About a week and a half ago, I think Jenna got some bad canned food. I don't know if I just hadn't noticed it being off or if it went bad after opening it, but she had a bit of diarrhea within a day of eating it. She then refused all canned that weekend and this last week I thought she seemed dehydrated, so I started feeding her Royal Canin YT to her soaked. She ate nothing but that for the first three or four days this last week, and as of today, she hasn't pooped for three days, although she is still eating - minimally the last two days and a little better today (back to canned food now and as of last night and today, some canned pumpkin to try to get things moving again. She doesn't care for it much though.) I'm guessing the Royal Canin just didn't go through well at all, even if it was at first. She had BAD gas the day after Thanksgiving, (maybe from the dry?), so I was certain someone had either given her, or she had scrounged, something she shouldn't have had. However, some Mylicon took care of the gas. But although she's peed regularly for the last 3 days, there's been no poops. (She's also had some boiled round steak and it's juice yesterday and the day before.) If she hasn't gone by tomorrow, I'm most likely taking her in. She also doesn't like to poop when it's really cold outside, which it is now. But although I hear regular tummy noises coming from her gut, I just don't understand why there hasn't at least been some 'mouse poop?' Shouldn't SOMETHING be coming out? She's been acting pretty much like herself, but since I've only had her since April, I am still not always sure what would be 'normal' for her and what wouldn't. I see some folks recommending green beans for constipation. Is it okay if they're frozen ones? Should I try those first? Do they need to be cooked? Or should I go directly to something like Dulcolax? If so, how much should she have? She's only 6.5 pounds. About to take her out for her last walk of the evening, provided she's willing and it's not bitter cold out. If she goes, I'll be sure to update. Keeping my fingers crossed for a result! |

YT Addict | Okay we just got back and YES, success! ^_^ *dances* Looks normal. Now I just hope she doesn't swing back the other way! Still, would like to know about the green beans or dulcolax, if anyone's used them. And I'm in the market for a better dry food for her. *nods* Something grain-free, preferably, that stocks in Alaska. ^_^ She's also a poor water drinker. If anyone has tips on getting her to drink more fluids, I'd appreciate it. |

| Personally I would not use dulcolax. Frozen green beans are fine to give, although I'm not sure they have a laxative effect. If you want to increase her drinking, try adding a bit of fat free no salt added or low sodium chicken broth to her food and make it watery. I am talking like a tablespoon of chicken broth and dilute it. You could also try just adding food items with high water content (e.g. green beans). Canned food has higher water content than dry, so dogs will drink less on canned food than dry. As for dry food, I home cook so I have no suggestions but I do know that LadyJane uses Castor and Pollux Organic dog kibble that can be purchased at Whole Foods Market or at Petsmart and she speaks highly of it and how well the dogs do.

| You can add about a teaspoon of canned PACKED pumpkin to food for constipation. I also would not recommend Dulcolax for constipation. You need to be very careful what types of people medications that you give to animals. Some like Tylenol could be deadly. As for a kibble, I use Natural Balance Lamb and Brown Rice for my three. I don''t think the Castor and Pollux is a grain free food.

Some good grain-free kibbles include: Orijen, Acana, Fromm Surf & Turf, Wellness Core, Merrick Before Grain, Petcurean's Go! Endurance formula. I encouraged my boys to drink more water by making sure their water is always fresh, and I praise them when I see them taking a drink. After experimenting with various sources of water, I learned that they prefer tap water. Some people here have found that a doggy water fountain helps. Based on my limited experience with my 2 Yorkies, I believe green beans can have different effects on different dogs. For some, the fiber in the beans give bulk to stools which helps express the anal glands and keep them healthy. For others, like my boys, the fiber can cause diarrhea and painful gas. We use sweet baby peas instead. If you decide to add either one to Jenna's diet, use frozen, no added salt brands. Microwave and cool with cold water. | |
