Rescue Bailey won't eat I erverybody! My rescue Yorkie "Bailey" (we think he is 12) is with us now a week and a half. The little boy has been dumped at the vets to be put down. I do also have a 13 year old Yorkie girl since she was a puppy, so the vet does know me very well and called me to see if I would adopt Bailey. When I saw his little poor face I possibly couldn't say no! Bailey has been starved for several weeks and is completely undernourished, he also has the most awful teeth I have ever seen. So, the problem is he won't eat sufficient to build up weight-he obviously has terribble pains while eating. It doesn't help that he also is the most fussy eater I have ever seen! Thought my girl is bad enough, but he is impossible. Bought every quality puppy food available, cooked at least 10 different homecooked meals- he only takes a bit of roast beef in gravy with rice. Anyway, I'm getting seriously worried now, don't know what else to offer him. He will have his dental surgery next Monday, but don't know if he will survive it if he doesn't eat!! Please, need some ideas asap!!

Rescue Bailey won't eat Dear Diego! Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I did try the seringe but he really hates it and wants to bite like crazy. Since yesterday he is on a course of antibiotics which I think does upset his little tummy too. He is getting weaker and weaker so I will try, I have to try it again! Many thanks again Diego

Would he take Complan or one of the other liquid foods you can get from the chemist or health food shops, do you think? They're made for invalids with poor appetites so are supposed to be very nourishing & easy to take. Just an odd suggestion this, but a friend of mine took on an old rescued yorkie a few years ago & he would eat nothing at all but tinned frankfurter sausages from the supermarket. He especially preferred the cheapest own brand sort from Asda, cost about 12p a tin, as they were all he'd ever been fed by his previous owner! He had bad teeth & the sausages were very soft having been sat in water in the can, better than nothing I suppose, but she very gradually weaned him onto better food.

I also just got a rescue.... Hecurrently has a fever waiting on vet to call! Anyhow, Mine would also not eat at first. Same basic scenerio as yours upon arrival to our home. Rice was one of the first things Spike at as well. We did find that he would drink chicken broth warmed slightly. Then we intergrated it to the food (soaked kibble mixed with some rice) Up until he got the fever last night he had begun to eat regularly. Good luck!

FEED WITH A SYRINGE, SPOON OR IN A BOWL. FULL OF PROTEIN AND VERY NOURISHING. (HAS NEVER CAUSED DIARRHEA) Quote:

To everybody who answerded Hi everybody! Just joined today and can't beleave how many great tips I had for saving Bailey-thank you so much!!! Bailey had some antibiotic since last eve (Go-Amoxy Clav) and he suddenly has changed this noon- he actually had some nature diet puppy food with roast beef and gray!!!!!!!!! Ufff,, he didn't eat the last 24 hours. Anyway, bought some Complan and will try the great pudding recipe (sounds absolutely fab!) tomorrow-probably great after his dental surgery on Monday.Thank you soo much guys!!!!! Will let you know whow he does. Newertheless, in the meantime I have a prob with my little Gordigirl- she was fine so far the last two weeks, but now she is showing a bit of jealousy, more sadness I would say-poor girl, she is been rotten spoiled for 13 years and now suddenly has a grandfather to worry about!! She has been great so far, think she sensed Bailey's weakness. Anyway, love to everbody who applied to me, very very appreciated - so glad I joined Yorki Talk, even I did everthing wrong to start with, still haven't got a clue how to use this site probably!!

Glad to hear he's eating I'm glad to hear Bailey's eating now. A lot of rescues have problems with their teeth being so rotten from lack of care. Many of them lose many, if not all of their teeth. But if they are infected it can be so painful. It is the same for humans. I know this may sound weird, but I myself had an abcess tooth and the pain was unbearable. The dentist put me on antibiotics right away and by the following morning I was almost pain free. Funny how an infection can cause such trouble. Imagine how Bailey must have felt with more than one rotten tooth. I'm sure things will only look up once he recovers fully from the mouth surgery. If he loses a lot or all his teeth he will need to continue to eat soft food, so be sure and ask the vet what he/she suggests. Good Luck Bailey!!!

| Wonderful that you rescued a senior. Charlie is 11, and came to live with me last year. I also had major dental for Charlie and he has just a few teeth in the back of the lower jaw. He is fed Orijen kibble (measured, placed in plastic container with lid, covered with water and soaked overnight in the refrigerator). That is his entire kibble for the next day for two meals. I warm up the pre-soaked kibble with wet food and he never misses cleaning the entire bowl. So much easier on their mouth, and he should feel much better once the diseased teeth are gone. Welcome to Yorkie Talk and look forward to success for your new pup. Warmly, Deborah
