Exclamation Ranger is sick

My poor baby, I am so upset right now, I know that all of you can completely relate. Hubby and I were up the mountain snowmobiling all weekend, and noticed that Ranger's poo was a little loose Sat. AM. He seemed fine Sat. PM, but when we got back in the truck after dinner he had had an accident (diarrhea) in his crate, which has NEVER happened before. We got back to the hotel and cleaned him up, fed him, and played with him- he was ABSOLUTELY normal Sat. night- playing, running around, jumping on Robert's head, all normal Ranger stuff.

The next morning he was still acting pretty normal, but in hindsight, I did notice he was just is bit off. But when we got back to the truck Sunday afternoon he had diarrhea all over his crate, was shaking, and had glassy eyes, really pale gums. I let him out and he started having BLOODY diarrhea. I FREAKED OUT. Robert got the sleds on the trailer and got us off the mountain to the emergency clinic in less than 2 hours (really good time, especially w/ bad roads), I cried the whole way home.

We got him to the vet, neg. parvo test, decided to put him on fluids, anti-nausea, etc, and kept him there- I used Franklin's mom's method and took Benadryl so I could sleep.

I picked him up this morning to take him to my normal vet, and he looked really good. I couldn't take him to my vet for an hour so stopped at home where I was going to clean him up. He wanted out so I took him outside where he immediately started w/ the bloody diarrhea again. I am just panicking. He's back at the vet on fluids, but the dr. hasn't seen him yet. I feel like I should have kept him at the emergency clinic, as they have the best small animal doctors in the area. I am not as confident in our routine vet clinic, as my normal vet is out of town and another vet whom I have never met before is going to be treating him. I don't feel really good about it and don't know what to do, I am so worried and he's so tiny and helpless. Hubby says we can take him somewhere else, or back to WestVet, but I don't want to stress him out anymore.

Kind thoughts and prayers needed. Sorry so long, I just know you guys understand.

Yorkies are very well known for getting bloody diarrhea. I've had a lot of fosters that just had bloody puddles. It's generally due to two things. What they are eating and/or stress. Medications will also cause this. I got a little foster girl that had been on one medication after another for giardiasis to the point where she was very, very sick and had bloody puddles. I took her off of the dog food she had been on and off of all medications. I started her on rice and chicken gradually. She was under stress as well untill she started feeling safe and happy with us.
Sounds like your little guy was stressed when you left him alone in a strange motel, then he was ok and happy when you got back and even played and played, till you left him alone again. I think your baby was maybe too young to be locked in a crate in a strange place. He probably felt really trapped and alone. This can definately cause diarrhea. Now with the medications he's been given, can add to the problem and of course with this intestinal inflamation I'm sure the kibble is just adding to the problem.
I'm so sorry he is going thru this. I do hope things turn around for him soon.

I guess it makes me feel a bit better that yorkies are prone to this. I would agree with the stress thing, aside from the fact that he has been going snowmobiling with us every weekend since the end of November. He wasn't left alone in a motel, he was left in the truck in his crate, with his heated crate pad, just like every other time. The loose stool started Sat. morning, before we even left him.

He hasn't been on any meds, and gets Innova puppy food, which he's been on for months. The dr. said he probably got into something on Thursday or Friday, which I just can't think of what as I watch him like a hawk. However, he does go outside in the backyard by himself. I kept racking my brain to remember if he got anything he shouldn't have at home.

I have already planned to start him back on bland homecooked food, such as white chicken and brown rice. I just have such anxiety because I don't know what is going on with him. What a horrible feeling. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

It's so scary when our little ones are ill. I hope your vet can pin down the problem soon and get your baby back to normal.

As for the dog food, well did you know that not all bags of the same brand are exactly the same? Sometimes you can get a bad bag of food. Something that went into the making could have been moldy or worse.
I'm still thinking stress and food related, but don't mind me, I'm just an ol lady who is a bit crotchety at times.

Sad

That happened to yogi just last week. the vet did a poo test and gave yogi all sorts of anti biotics and diariah meds and some purina vet wet dog food and he started being himself again. the poo test came back negative so there was nothing wrong with him. he must of just ate something bad but its safe to say we spent 300$ for nothing really.

Hopefully its the same deal with your pup and he is ok.

id try some diariah meds from the vet before you go on a big cocktail of antibiotics. I just hate putting a thousand meds into my yorkies if its not needed.

Hopefully your vet can get this under control

Default Update!

Thank you all!!!!!

I spoke with the vet some time ago, who said that he most likely is suffering from eating something gross. I did have him out at the ranch where we keep our horses on Thursday pm, so I guess that even though he is always on leash, he could have picked something up gross from there.

Anyway, she wants him to go home this evening, as that clinic doesn't stay staffed at night and she wants him watched 24/7 for a couple days. She is keeping him on fluids all day, and will then give him some fluids sub q (under the skin) before we bring him home, to keep him hydrated through the night. We will take him in 1st thing tomorrow and decide what route to take (keep him home, or have him there another day) just depends on how he does tonight. I appreciated the fact that she would rather him be home, than take him back to West Vet.

I can't wait to bring him home! 24 hours w/o a furbaby is torture!!! Thanks for all the kind thoughts!!!

Poor Yogi! Sounds like you guys got off a bit better than we will. 24 hours on fluids is pretty spendy- it was $500 just last night. Sigh. Anything for our babies, huh?
