Update Chewie well we have been busy , the vet gave chewie the plasma transfusion at cost.thankyou Dr.Crawshaw and i m making payments. chewie is back to he old self, for now he is on steroids, vitamin, antibiotic, and a home cooked diet of boiled chicken breast, turkey breast , rice and potatoes we will be adding others soon. his albumin only went up to.8 so we are still praying he stays in the right direction and doesn't start leaking the protien again. he is still very bony but he eats four times a day and is always looking for someone to play ball with. i try to get him to lay around more, i'm afraid he will burn off any weight he gains by running around. they say he has lymphangioplasia? the inability of his intestines to absorb protien. he is two years old and never had any problems with food (other than when he got into the cat food and had diarreha) his belly never blew up till the vet put him on science diet I/D.(not on that any more) i'm not sure if the diarreha set it off or what i just hope i can keep him around for a lot more years without breaking the bank.

he had a bout with diarreha , then one night he was just lying around shaking , panting heavily, he seriously looked like he was dying. took him to emergency vet they thought it was gastritis, took xrays, blood work, stool sample, every thing came back no gastritis, no parasites, he did have a lot of air in his intestines, liver looked fine, heart etc, they had him on a i.v. and i took him to the regular vet who ran more blood work ,put him n science diet I/D for the diarreaha(which he didn't have again since i had him home, then about a week and a half later his belly swells up like a balloon(but he is acting fine) thus after more blood work etc they tell me his protien is down to 0.4 and they are amazed he is walking around, so plasma transfusion , steroids, antibiotic, home cooked diet and a week later it is up to 0.8 so hopefully he will be ok when we weanh im off the steroids. whew that took a long time

Low albumin... I wanted to share my story... Oddly enough my yorkie's name is Chewbaka a.k.a Chewy and his ordeal started in November '07. I took him for his routine check up and the vet found that he had an albumin level of .5! He also said it was a miracle that Chewy was "acting normal." The vet referred me to a specialist and she then did a plasma transfusion, which he had to spend the night at the clinic and an endoscopy the next day. She put Chewy on a series of medications including a steriod. It seemed like a Christmas miracle... Chewy was doing sooooo much better. He stopped vomitting, his tummy bloat went away, his stools were hardening, and best of all his albumin went up to 1.5! Sadly the new year did not start on a good note for us, on a recheck visit a month later, his albumin went back down to .8! I decided that I was not going to give on Chewy...I decided to try something drastically different because the more I read up on his condition, I found that the steriods are toxins for his kidneys which is why Chewy had a high BUN of 77!!!! I did some research and found one of the best holistic vets where I live and took him. He was given acunpucture, aquapuncture, and natural herbal supplemnets. He was doing awesome... his albumin went up to 2.0 and his BUN was high but not dangerously high. His stools were normal and no vomitting. Plus he was loving his new diet, (at new vet's suggustion) Chewy was now eating all organic foods including salmon, sardines, tofu, chicken, beef liver, kale, spinach etc... But sadly yesterday, his tummy became bloated again so I suspected the worst, and I was right...Chewy is getting sick again. His albumin was .5!!!! I have an appointment this afternoon with his holistic vet. I have been crying all night about what else I could possible do for my baby...
